Skydio has announced R1, a self-flying AI-powered drone that will follow you on your adventures. Skydio R1 is fully autonomous, equipped with 12 navigational cameras. It shoots 4K videos, and the company says it features the most advanced tracking and navigation system ever flown.

Adam Bry, CEO and co-founder of Skydio, explains that the company has spent the last four years working on the technology. They have solved the problems in robotics and AI to make fully autonomous flight possible, and R1 is the result of these efforts.

Skydio R1 is designed to fly safely even at high speeds. It is powered by the Skydio Autonomy Engine, which enables it to see and understand the world around it. Thanks to this, the drone avoids obstacles successfully even in the challenging environments. The company explains that R1 can also “see” people and anticipate how they move, which allows it to make decisions how to take the best shot in real-time.

In order to capture videos with Skydio R1, you need to download the mobile app. It lets you launch or land the drone and choose the shooting mode. You can also use it to make HD-videos of the flight and share them instantly on social media.

Judging from the current trends, it was probably only a matter of time when we would get the AI-powered drone.  It has arrived, and I am looking forward to seeing the first impressions and reviews.

The company notes that R1 was built with athletes, adventurers, and creatives in mind. The drone is available for orders on Skydio’s website, and it ships two to three weeks after ordering. The price is $2,499, and at the moment it’s available only in the US and Canada.
