Peak Design Outdoor Line

Peak Design has announced a new Outdoor Line of camera bags (Kickstarter). The new lineup includes two new backpacks and two sling bags, along with a range of accessories. Interestingly, these are actually Peak Design’s first dedicated outdoor bags.

The company says they’ve “straddled the outdoor and photography industries”, but now they’ve finally jumped in with the new line. Why? Well, they say it’s to “address issues like poor fit, overly-bulky harness systems, limited access, and over-engineered ‘technically baroque’ designs”.

Peak Design Outdoor Line – 45L and 25L Backpacks

The new collection consists of four bags. There are two backpacks with 25L and 45L capacities and two slings with 2L and 7L capacities. Each is available in three different colours: Black, Eclipse and Cloud. If the latter two colours don’t make much sense, here is how all three colours look on the 45L backpack.

As you can see, the Black and Eclipse look similar, although the eclipse is more of a dark grey. These colours are available for all of the bags in the lineup. So, if you want to get multiple bags of different sizes and styles, you can have them all match.

The 45L Outdoor Backpack features an “Ultra Cinch” roll top, giving you some wiggle room with how much you can pack in there. It also has weatherproof rear panel access, allowing you to access your gear when needed but keeping it protected from rain when not.

Peak Design has been synonymous with ‘outdoor photography.’ Yet we still haven’t created true outdoor bags…until now. The Outdoor Line is not only the culmination of everything we’ve learned as bag designers, it’s also a giant nod to our most loyal and longest-tenured customers.

Peak Design says that they’re designed for comfort and functionality. And on an outdoor bag where you’re hiking or camping with a bunch of camera gear, comfort in particular is very important. It features a laptop slot that can also be used for hydration packs.

The 25L version features pretty much the same overall design and feature set. Both bags offer lots of pockets for storing small items to keep them safe. However, their design also allows them to be easily accessible when you need them.

The main difference is the construction. The 45L backpack features an internal frame, along with a harness to equip it comfortably and securely. The 25L backpack doesn’t appear to have an internal frame and sports two low-profile shoulder straps.

There is a range of accessories available for the Outdoor line to help you organise and protect your gear. There are several packing cube and camera cube modules that slip inside the backpacks as well as rain covers to minimise further the chances of your gear getting wet.

The Peak Design Outdoor sling bags are also available in the same three Black, Cloud and Eclipse colours as the two backpacks above. They’re available in 2L and 7L capacities, depending on your carry needs. The 2L can hold a small mirrorless camera and lens, but you’ll obviously be able to fit more in the 7L.

They feature an adjustable padded shoulder strap. One-handed operation allows you to quickly and easily grab your gear whenever you need it. It also converts into a chest pouch when used in combination with either of the two Outdoor backpacks above.

Price and Availability

All of the new bags and accessories in the Peak Design Outdoor lineup are currently on Kickstarter. The campaign runs from September 3rd until October 15th with a 20-25% discount depending on the item compared to retail prices when they finally hit the stores.
