Nikon has just launched NX Studio, all-in-one software that lets you view and edit your photos, including both photos and video. It’s made to help you edit everything in one place, and it’s completely free for download, so let’s see what you can expect from it.

Of course, NX Studio is compatible with Nikon digital cameras. This includes the Z series, all Nikon DSLRs, COOLPIX, Nikon 1, and KeyMission cameras. “NX Studio integrates the image viewing features of ViewNX-i and processing/editing features of Capture NX-D into one piece of software,” Nikon explains. It’s available for both Mac and Windows and works together with other Nikon software suites: Camera Control Pro 2, Picture Control Utility 2, and others.

You can edit raw files, including .NEF and .NRW formats. Additionally, you can also work with JPEG and TIFF files. NX Studio also allows you to edit up to 4K videos, but of course, note that you’ll need a decent processor and RAM for that to run smoothly. You can see the system requirements here, and here are the key features of the software:

  • The viewing, processing, and editing of still images and video can be completed seamlessly.
  • Features a menu structure categorized by workflow and a functional yet simple design.
  • Features a variety of display options, such as filmstrip with both horizontal and vertical preview options, as well as a 2/4 screen comparison option, in addition to a simple and easy-to-read shooting information display.
  • Supports the precise editing of images with detailed editing functions such as color control points that enable the adjustment of colors within a specified area and a retouch brush to remove dust and scratches in the image.
  • Easy-to-understand user interface with menu items and terminology that match those of Nikon cameras.
  • Users can choose how adjustment information is saved, whether in a separate file using the sidecar file format or directly to the image file itself.
  • Includes XMP/IPTC information editing and preset management functions.
  • Works with other software such as Nikon Transfer 2 and Camera Control Pro 2.

NX Studio is available for download, and as I mentioned, it’s completely free. You’ll find the download page on this link.

You have to scroll all the way down to Agreement, mark Accept and select your region. Then the Download-option activates!

Interesting, I can’t wait to see what performance is like. I always loved using Capture NX-D for the image but was atrocious in terms of performance.

I agree. Image editing yields just fantastic results for Nikon RAW shooters. You can not beat NX Studio’s output quality. Unprecedented white balance comparing to other softwares. Even the workflow is pretty good once used to it. On the downside, it’s still lacking performance, especially for large resolution files. I think that there is much room for speed optimization. Can be annoying, but results are just great. Also this is not an editor where you can do some crazy edits like PS. You get the same image – improved. If the preview speed was not a problem, this would be a best image editing app.

If nx studio wants to compete with lightroom, it needs to work with other camera manufacturers raw file formats

They’re not trying to compete with Lightroom. They’re competing with canon and Sony . This is to help Nikon sell their own cameras . Making the software to work with Canon or Sony would be like shooting themselves on the foot .

That may be true, but the headline says Nikon releases software to take on Light room and capture One

So Nikon users don’t have to migrate to Lightroom, which is not standalone.

Hah this isn’t competition for Capture One, not even in the same Galaxy.

I struggle to see a point in camera manufacturers spending ressources on software development, given the number of excellent options that we already have.

Imagine this… You’ve never owned a camera before except perhaps the one in your phone. You decide you’re going to buy one. You’ve never heard of Capture One or Affinity Photo. Maybe you’ve heard of Photoshop, probably not Lightroom, but you have no idea why you might want to invest in a monthly subscription for the rest of your natural life.

Are you suggesting those people just shoot jpg instead? :)

      1. Karsten Bruun Qvist Avatar

Kaouthia, thanks, you just helped me in my struggle ? I have been using Photoshop (and lots of other stuff) for 20 years, and simply did not see the angle you point out. You have a point!

I tried Nikon software in different PC’s with windows on them… Current Issues: It takes to long to try to open any file; It freezes; it hangs; it shuts itself off. Software extremely unstable. Eventually, when you click over a Raw/ Nef, jpeg or tiff, it does not respond, If the software happens to open properly, it opens up any folder but NOT the one the user selects. The PC’s – that I have – were were custom built to work exclusively with photo editing software with Generous RAM and hard drive capacity for the last versions of: ACDSee Photo Studio Ultimate, Topaz DeNoise AI, Affinity Photo, and On1 Photo Raw.

Clumsy as usual… They are trying to polish the surface, but looks really more like Bridge. Tried it: You move a slider, you wait, you move again, oops the adjustment from the first move just came in… You want to go back to 0, double click on the handle – nothing. Double click on the numbers, nothing. There was a reason why I switched to Capture One. No subscription needed. You upgrade when you want; you don’t have to. And even being excluded with my Pentax medium format raw files, using DNG is worth the detour.

Using FTP, Email or cloud methods for file transfer is just too slow. I suggest a fast file transfer software called Binfer as a great alternative.
