Laowa Brings Its 90mm f/2.8 2x Ultra Macro Lens to Micro Four Thirds

Laowa is expanding its Micro Four Thirds lineup once again. This time, the company is adding an MFT mount to its well-known 90mm f/2.8 2x Ultra Macro APO lens, giving MFT shooters access to serious close-up power in a relatively compact package.
Originally designed for full-frame mirrorless systems, the lens now lands on Micro Four Thirds with a few meaningful advantages. Thanks to the 2x crop factor, that 2x macro capability effectively becomes a 4x full-frame equivalent. In practical terms, that means tiny subjects can completely fill the frame without extension tubes or extra accessories.
What The Laowa 90mm MFT Brings To The Table
At its core, the Laowa 90mm MFT is all about precision. The lens uses an apochromatic optical design to suppress both longitudinal and lateral chromatic aberration. That’s especially important for macro work, where high-contrast edges and specular highlights can easily reveal color fringing.
Laowa pairs that optical formula with a nine-blade aperture, which helps produce smoother background blur. While this is clearly a macro-first lens, the 180mm full-frame equivalent field of view also makes it usable for compressed portraits and detail shots when you want strong subject separation.
Another welcome addition for MFT users is electronic aperture control. You can adjust aperture directly from the camera body, EXIF data is recorded properly, and image stabilization systems get better information to work with – all things that adapted manual lenses often struggle with.

Internal Focusing
One detail that matters more than it sounds is internal focusing. The lens doesn’t extend as you focus closer, which helps avoid bumping into subjects or blocking your own light when working at minimum distance. Laowa lists a minimum working distance of 205mm, giving you a bit more breathing room for lighting and composition.
Despite its capabilities, the lens remains reasonably portable. On Micro Four Thirds, it measures about 115mm in length and weighs roughly 540g. That’s not tiny, but it’s still far more manageable than many high-magnification macro setups, especially for handheld or field work.

How the 90mm f/2.8 2x Ultra Macro APO Fits Into Laowa’s MFT Lineup
This isn’t Laowa’s first macro lens for Micro Four Thirds. The company already offers the 50mm f/2.8 2x Ultra Macro APO, which was designed specifically for the format and is known for its compact size and 2x magnification. By adding the 90mm option, Laowa gives MFT shooters a longer working distance and more reach. It’s especially useful for insects, skittish subjects, or controlled studio setups.
Together, these lenses show a clear pattern. Laowa continues to treat Micro Four Thirds as a serious system rather than an afterthought, offering native options instead of forcing users to rely on adapted glass.
