Hurricane Milton is rapidly intensifying as it barrels towards the west coast of Florida, prompting widespread evacuations and warnings of potential devastation. Astronaut Matthew Dominick took an incredible, terrifying image from aboard the International Space Station. It shows the hurricane’s massive swirling cloud cover, illuminated by the sun.
According to the latest news, Hurricane Milton intensified into a Category 5 storm as it approached Florida’s west coast. The Tampa Bay area, with over 3.3 million residents, faced the threat of severe damage, having not been directly hit by a major hurricane in over a century.
“We flew over Hurricane Milton about 90 minutes ago,” Dominick wrote on X on Tuesday, October 8. “Here is the view out the Dragon Endeavour window. Expect lots of images from this window as this is where I’m sleeping while we wait to undock and return to Earth.”
He also shared a timelapse, which shows the scale of the hurricane:
Dominick’s photo provides a unique perspective on the storm’s power and scale and serves as a reminder of the destructive force of nature. But what’s equally impressive when you think about it is that we get real-time photos of hurricanes (and many other nature’s forces and wonders) from space. As Gareth Jenkinson put it: “Man we live in the future. To have HD video from space so easily accessible on social media still breaks my brain. What a time to be alive.”
