In recognition of Instagram’s 5th birthday, TIME has compiled a list of the 5 most-liked photos on the photo-sharing app, as well as a list of the 5 most popular photos for each of the five years.
With over 40 billion photos shared by its 400 million users, now averaging 80 million new photos and 3.5 billion “likes” per day, the competition should be fierce.
I say should because with so many users and photo you’d expect varied results, especially with more than 75% of users living outside of the USA, but that’s far from being the case.
Current events, news, politics? Not even close. “America’s First Family” are the big winners, and I’m not referring to the one living in the White House.
The 5 most popular photos ever
- May 25, 2015: Kendall Jenner’s hearty hairdo (I’m not sure of the connection, but she’s related to the Kardashians somehow):
- September 4, 2015: Taylor Swift showing off flowers sent by Kardashian-by-marriage Kanye West:

- July 3, 2015: Taylor Swift again, this time with DJ Calvin Harris who also happens to be her boyfriend:

- May 27, 2014: Kim Kardashian and Kanye West’s wedding photo:
- July 23, 2015: Kylie Jenner, also related to the Kardashians, proving that she finished high school:

You’ll notice that most these photos are very recent, with four of them being posted four month ago or less. At the rate Instagram is gaining popularity and growing, we can expect a new “all time” favorite to show up sooner than later.
The 5 most popular photos by year
Those of you who are less into the Kardashians, but still into celebrities, might prefer the top photo for each of the five years Instagram exists:
2010: The first Instagram, posted by founder (and current CEO) Kevin Systrom, is a photo of a golden retriever and his girlfriend’s foot: (Did he start the trend of feet photos on social media?)
2011: Justin Bieber with father and siblings:
2012: Louis Tomlinson and Zayn Malik of One Direction:
2013: Bieber again, this time with “uncle” Will Smith
2014: The famous wedding photo
2015: No surprises here. Obviously the most popular photo ever is also the most popular photo (so far) of 2015.
Notice the massive jump in “likes” and comments between each photo. Except for 2013 and 2014 where the number of comments was slightly lower, every year showed an significant increase and both comment and likes.
With the 2010 photo receiving 42.8k likes and 26.2k comments and the 2015 photo receiving 3.1 million likes and 137.9k comments, it’s easy to see just how much the platform has grown and why it can be a useful tool to promote yourself.
That being said, you probably won’t be as noticed if you’re not somehow related to the Kardashian family.
