Back in the days before gimbals were invented, we had the Steadicam. Now, I am not saying that Gimbals are easy, but getting a good shot from a Steadicam is somewhere between science and art.
Speaking of art, did you catch that Eurovision contest yesterday? it was Epic. So epic that we felt obliged to share an email we got about Eurovisions and Steadicams.
The shot above was taken at the 2009 Eurovision contest while Belarus were playing their song and it’s stellar. Before hitting the play button below, see if you can guess how the shot above was taken. Then see the clip below
The Steadicam operator is Karsten Jacobsen, and he is riding a Segway, this is how he gets the speed and smoothness. Then he jumos off to the stairs and keeps going, to circle the star a couple rounds. Then a cut.
*Get 10 brag points if you know why’s that guy running after him.

Guy after him is a focus puller/ 1AC
what dat? o.0
A man who wirelessly pulls focus ring on a lens, keeping subject in a focus
If he’s wireless, why does he have to run next to the camera?
He has no playback, professional ACs use marks on a focus device.
BTW, it is possible that this time follow focus is realy wired
Broadcast cameras also have typically MUCH smaller sensors than DSLR/Mirrorless/Cinema cameras, so you’ve got a ton of depth of field.
I thought we got drones for this kind of stuff.
“Steadicam operator is Karsten Jacobsen, and he is riding a Segway, this is how he gets the speed and smoothness. Then he jumps off to the stairs and keeps going, to circle the star a couple rounds” WOW
It’s a remote control – he’s actually controlling the guy holding the steadicam…who’s not a human, but a replicant.
i’m guessing he is the second is the focus puller?
