The Bresser Nebula 6 EQ/AZ WiFi-Network Mount is a versatile and technologically advanced telescope mount designed for both amateur and professional astronomers.  With its dual-mode functionality, integrated Raspberry Pi control unit, and extensive connectivity options, it offers a seamless experience for astrophotography and celestial observation.

Design and build quality

Crafted in Italy, the Nebula 6 mount boasts a robust construction using CNC-machined stainless steel and aluminum components.  This ensures durability while maintaining a lightweight profile, with the mount weighing approximately 11 kg and the accompanying tripod adding another 5 kg.  The mount’s design allows for precise and quiet operation, making it ideal for long exposure astrophotography sessions.

Dual mounting modes

One of the standout features of the Nebula 6 is its ability to switch between equatorial (EQ) and alt-azimuth (AZ) modes.  This flexibility caters to various observational needs:

  • Equatorial Mode (EQ): Ideal for tracking celestial objects as they move across the sky, compensating for Earth’s rotation.
  • Alt-Azimuth Mode (AZ): Suitable for terrestrial observations and tracking satellites, offering a more intuitive setup for beginners.

The mount supports a load capacity of up to 18 kg in EQ mode and up to 25 kg in AZ mode, accommodating a wide range of telescope setups.

Integrated Raspberry Pi control unit

At the heart of the Nebula 6 is an integrated Raspberry Pi 4 microcomputer.  This built-in control unit eliminates the need for external devices, allowing users to manage the mount and connected accessories directly.  The Raspberry Pi features multiple USB ports (2 x USB 3.0 and 2 x USB 2.0) and an Ethernet port, facilitating connections to cameras, motor focusers, filter wheels, and other peripherals.

The mount’s integrated web application enables central control of all components via smartphones, tablets, or computers.  This web-based interface provides a virtual hand control box and settings menu, streamlining the user experience.

Software compatibility

The Nebula 6 is compatible with a wide array of astronomy software, enhancing its versatility:

  • Planetarium Programs: Cart du Ciel (Star Chart), TheSkyX, SkySafari, Stellarium.
  • Astrophotography Tools: Sequence Generator Pro (SGP), NINA, CCD Ciel.

Thanks to its support for Alpaca and ASCOM/INDI protocols, the mount integrates seamlessly with various software platforms, providing users with flexibility in their choice of tools.

Precision engineering

The Nebula 6 employs a toothed belt drive system, ensuring precise and quiet tracking of celestial objects.  The mount’s gear system features a right ascension (RA) gear with a diameter of 76 mm and 172 teeth, and a declination (DEC) gear with a diameter of 86 mm and 172 teeth.  This configuration minimizes backlash and enhances tracking accuracy, essential for astrophotography.

Versatile optics attachment

The mount includes a dual-prism clamping system compatible with both Vixen GP and Losmandy dovetail standards.  This allows for the attachment of a wide range of optical tubes.  Additionally, users have the option to replace the counterweight bar with a second telescope, enabling dual-optic setups.  This feature is particularly beneficial for those interested in simultaneous visual observation and imaging.
