This Egg Drone is a breeze of cool air in the world of Karmas and Mavics

Both DJI and GoPro announced their Mavic and Karma drones. While there are some notable differences they are both following a familiar form factor. If you are looking for something completely different, you may wanna take a look at the PowerEgg from PowerVision. I think it is kind of easy to realizes how the drone got its name, but see if you can tell for yourself ;).

The PowerEgg that looks like something from Arrival has a completely new form factor – it’s shaped like an egg. That makes it extremely portable and very robust – you can just toss it in your bag when traveling. (on the other hand its about 2.7Kg with batery) The PowerEgg boasts a 4K camera with a 22 mm (35 mm equivalent) f/2.8 lens (that will give you a FOV of 95°).

On the good side, the PowerEgg is a sure conversation starter, you would get many, many looks and questions when you pull it out on the field. The retracting landing gear is a jaw opener for sure. Flight-wise, however, I am not 100% sure that this drone is optimal. The vertical formfactor create a lot of movement on the camera end. There is a 3-axis gimbal in place, so I guess we will have to wait for reviews to see if it compensates for the excessive tilting.

Another interesting feature is how the EggDrone is handling obstacles. Rather than Obstacle Avoidance, the PowerEgg is using gesture control. You can waive the remote to make the drone move left and right. The company says this is very intuative and will really help you avoid that tree in your path.

You can preorder the PowerEgg for $1,288 over at PowerVision. Sadly no final word on shipping date yet, though the company estimates 8-10 weeks.
