Canon’s New EOS C50 Packs a 7K Full-Frame Sensor into Its Smallest Cinema Camera Yet

After weeks of teasing, Canon has just pulled back the curtain on a new addition to its Cinema EOS lineup. The EOS C50 seems squarely aimed at the growing legion of solo shooters, documentarians, and content creators, and it packs some seriously high-end specs into what Canon is calling its smallest and lightest cinema camera ever.

The camera body weighs just over one and a half pounds, so it’s compact and handheld-friendly. But don’t let the smaller form factor fool you; this thing is built around a brand new 7K full-frame CMOS sensor. And yes, it does also shoot stills, although without a mechanical shutter.

A Compact Body for Documentary and Run-and-Gun Shooters

At first glance, the C50 looks like Canon is aiming squarely at shooters who want cinema image quality without lugging a brick around. The compact form factor makes sense for documentary work, handheld verité shooting, or even sports and event coverage, where you don’t want to be weighed down.

The detachable top handle is a smart inclusion because it brings in two full-size XLR audio inputs, a record button, and even a zoom rocker, which should appeal to ENG-style shooters. Strip it down and it’s bare-bones small; kit it out and it’s production-ready.

And since it’s an RF-mount camera, you get access to Canon’s growing ecosystem of RF glass right out of the box. That’s increasingly important now that EF lenses are fading into legacy status. The launch of the new RF85mm F1.4 L VCM Hybrid lens alongside it just reinforces where Canon’s priorities are going.

Recording Modes: Open Gate and Social Media-Friendly Crops

The real star of the EOS C50 is the new 7K CMOS sensor. Canon has given it a dual base ISO of 800 and 6400 in Canon Log 2, which should mean good low-light flexibility. But the big first is full-frame 3:2 open gate recording, something we haven’t seen in a Cinema EOS body until now. That makes it a strong option for anamorphic shooting or projects where reframing in post is key.

On the codec side, the C50 isn’t short on options:

  • Cinema RAW Light (12-bit) at up to 7K/60p
  • XF-AVC, XF-AVC S, and XF-HEVC S formats, all with simplified folder structures and metadata baked in
  • MP4 recording, which will make life easier for editors who don’t want to mess about with proprietary formats

For those working in the TikTok/Instagram space, Canon added a very clever feature: simultaneous crop recording. Basically, you can shoot a full 4K frame while also recording a cropped version in vertical (9:16), ultra-vertical (9:17), or square (1:1). That means you don’t have to choose between cinematic 4K delivery and social media outputs, you get both in one go.

Connectivity and Cloud Integration

Remote and collaborative workflows are clearly on Canon’s radar here. The C50 supports the XC protocol, which lets you control the camera over IP via Wi-Fi or Ethernet (with a USB-C adapter). It also ties into Canon’s Multi Camera Control App for multi-rig setups, and comes with native Frame.io Camera-to-Cloud integration. If you’re working with remote editors or need instant backups, that’s a big deal.

The New RF85mm F1.4 L VCM Hybrid Lens

In other news, Canon also announced a new 85mm RF lens. An 85mm prime with f/1.4 isn’t groundbreaking in itself, but Canon says this one is built to balance both stills and video needs. The lens includes a new VCM motor, designed to minimise focus breathing, which has become a hot topic for hybrid and video shooters.

For portrait photographers, the 85mm focal length is a classic choice, and for filmmakers, the f/1.4 aperture will deliver that shallow depth-of-field look. It’s also part of Canon’s L-series, so expect weather sealing and pro-grade optics.

Firmware Updates Across the Line

Canon isn’t leaving existing users behind, either. The EOS C400, C80, C70, and R5C are all getting firmware updates later this year. Highlights include:

  • 3:2 open gate recording for the EOS C400
  • Better focus peaking
  • Improved button customisation
  • More responsive joystick controls

It’s not as flashy as a new camera body, but for owners already invested in Canon gear, these quality-of-life updates could make a noticeable difference.

A Pocketable Throwback: PowerShot ELPH 360 HS A

This release might seem strange, but Canon is delving back into the love of point-and-shoots with the refresh of its PowerShot ELPH 360 HS, originally released back in 2016. The updated ELPH 360 HS A still keeps that tiny pocket camera vibe but now uses microSD instead of SD cards. It’s a strange move in 2025, but for those who still want a truly pocketable point-and-shoot, Canon hasn’t abandoned the format just yet. It’ll be available in black and silver.
