Sony’s 61-megapixel A7R IV caused quite the splash when it was announced, becoming the highest resolution full-frame camera out there. Canon’s ageing 50-megapixel 5DS and 5DSR bodies were the previous champions, but they’re getting a little long in the tooth. According to a report on Canon Rumors, though, Canon is preparing to reclaim the throne with an 80+ megapixel EOS R body.
The post on Canon Rumors seems to back up the rumours that the 5DS and 5DSR are not going to be replaced in Canon’s DSLR lineup. It makes sense for Canon to be working on an ultra-high-resolution mirrorless camera, though. We reported back in November last year that a 75+ megapixel mirrorless body was expected to come from Canon at some point this year, and now that figure seems to have been bumped up to 80+ megapixels. The 5DS and 5DSR were announced in February 2015 and with no sign that canon is going to create a new higher-resolution DSLR, mirrorless is the logical choice.
Canon Rumors says that two sensors have been tested in a new EOS R body (that they’ve dubbed the “EOS RS”) and that one of them might be greater than 80-megapixels. With even smartphones reaching and starting to exceed 48-megapixels, and medium format cameras getting to a price where they’re starting to encroach on high-end DSLRs and mirrorless cameras, it’s not much of a surprise that camera manufacturers sitting in the middle want to beat out both sides.
So, it looks like the megapixel race is back on.
Canon is expected to announce new sensors at some point soon, which may offer some more clues. Hopefully, they’ll manage to squeeze some decent ISO performance and better shadow detail than most of their previous sensors.

Canon is quite out of the game right now.
Canon slept too much during this 5 years when Sony introduced the Evolution of images.
Nikon did a good job on last years to return in race (z6 is a good ml).
Canon made a eos R/RP that is completely out of time. (heat warning during photo sessions makes issues with customers, AF is unsafe. etc).
Canon needs to improve their ml actually in market, not focusing on new product.
I will not surprise if it lose incomes during the next Q.

I mean still #1 in market share. I see a lot of newer people picking up Sony but I see a lot of large organizations sticking with Canon and Nikon.

Canon is still “at the top” because of their “surgery/research labs ” sector.
Surgery and Hospital still use canon specified lens. This is why :)

Oh wait even more for Canon. When I start seeing more Sony’s than big white lenses at major sporting events or news events maybe maybe I’ll think they are more than an enthusiast brand
Sony has multiple big white lenses like their 600mm and 200-600 etc.
Your article doesn’t provide any evidence or even clearly states that Sony is the #1 camera maker.

Very major market that Nikon and Canon used to dominate with professional and amateur photographers! Sony still way ahead with their release of mirrorless cameras years ago and that Nikon and Canon just entered into!!

Canon should just rest on its laurels — that’s a time-proven formula for success. Go ahead and send them an email telling them how awesome they’re doing and to not change a thing.

Theres no need, if they just focus on what can be done with what theyve got already Id be happier. I realize Sony just dropped a bombshell, but its the features that are driving the body, the MP are just a bonus.
I keep reading all the Canon rumors, but so far they are just that….rumors. You can’t sell rumors. As a long time Canon user I need to see product.

Totally agree Alan I have now sold my Canon 5D mark iv 3 months ago,before it becomes worthless.I’m still waiting for the pro version of the mirrorless Canon camera and Sony has now taken the lead with the release of the new Sony A7R IV,which for me says Canon has missed the boat again,which results in more lost sales.I would be tempted to jump over to Sony if it was not for the fact I have soo much expensive L series canon lenses.Come on Canon give us some news.

I own a Sony A7 3. When using asp-c mode for quick zooms with prime lens, I would appreciate the A7R 4’s 61 mega-pixels. That’s still border line nuts, though. At 80+, the conversation is officially back to, how about we just take pictures now? Resolutions that high don’t account for terrible composition and lighting. The camera people bought last year, isn’t obsolete, because this year’s version added more resolution. There is a limit to what’s necessary, for your work.

1/4 crop factor micro four thirds has had 20mp for a few years. The same density on “Full Frame” is 80mp, so this is no giant leap.
Canon will have to come out with some awesome and expensive glass to resolve all those pixels, I doubt that most of their current lenses can.

Lol they cant even do a decent camera at lower MPs but I get they are desperate that decided to try the MP race as their only shot to please investors after their terrible financial report.

MP alone won’t be enough for me to buy it. They need to improve performance all around.
If it replaces the 5DSR/5DS, it means it will have a slow frames per second shooting since it is targeting studio and landscape photographers.
