Canon has officially introduced the EOS R6 Mark III, the latest model in its full-frame mirrorless lineup. Aimed at those working in both photography and video, the R6 Mark III builds on the foundation of the R6 Mark II with a higher-resolution sensor, improved video capabilities, and a range of features borrowed from Canon’s higher-end models.

Built for Both Photo and Video Work

The R6 Mark III is designed to handle a wide range of creative tasks. It retains the compact, weather-sealed body style of the Mark II but adds a 32.5MP full-frame CMOS sensor: a noticeable increase from the R6 II’s 24.2MP sensor. The new sensor works with Canon’s DIGIC X processor, supporting faster performance and improved video functionality.

The camera supports CFexpress Type B alongside SD UHS-II cards, offering more flexibility for managing large file sizes, particularly when shooting 7K or high-speed stills.

40 fps Continuous Shooting

One of the more notable upgrades is in burst performance. The R6 Mark III supports continuous shooting at up to 40 fps using its electronic shutter, doubling the 20 fps max of its predecessor. Mechanical shutter speed remains at 12 fps. It also includes a Pre-Shooting mode, capturing up to 20 frames before the shutter is fully pressed—a useful feature for fast or unpredictable subjects.

7K Internal Video Recording

Video capability is another area where the R6 Mark III steps ahead. While the R6 II maxed out at oversampled 4K60, the Mark III now records 7K internally in 12-bit Canon RAW Light, with external support for ProRes RAW. Oversampled 4K from 7K is still available, alongside 4K120p and Full HD at up to 180 fps.

Open Gate 3:2 recording is supported, which can be helpful for social content creators needing flexible aspect ratios. Tools such as waveform monitors, false color, and zebra patterns—borrowed from Canon’s Cinema EOS line—are also now included.

Autofocus and Image Stabilization

Canon’s Dual Pixel CMOS AF II has been refined again, with added functionality like Register People Priority. This lets users identify and prioritize specific individuals in group scenes. It’s the first time this feature has appeared in Canon’s EOS 6-series.

Image stabilization has been upgraded as well. The in-body IS system now offers up to 8.5 stops of compensation (compared to 8 stops on the R6 II). When paired with IS lenses, Coordinated IS is supported. Video shooters also benefit from additional stabilization via Canon’s Digital IS.

Updated Ergonomics and Interface

Physically, the R6 Mark III maintains the familiar design of its predecessors. It includes a 3.69M-dot OLED EVF, a vari-angle 3.0″ LCD with 1.62M dots, and a more refined menu interface. The Multi-Function Shoe adds compatibility with Canon’s newer powered accessories, like digital microphones and flash transmitters.

Dual card slots, USB-C 3.2 Gen 2 connectivity, and wireless features (Wi-Fi 5, Bluetooth 5.0) are all present, with support for Canon’s Camera Connect and Content Transfer apps. The camera can also function as a Full HD webcam without needing extra software.
