As expected, the official announcement of the EOS 5Ds and the EOS 5Ds R confirmed the leaked specifications.

Among the few newly revealed details are the shutter’s durability, intervalometer limitations and video recording specifications.

The cameras will be available a bit later than expected, but the pricing is a pleasant surprise.

Starting on the business end, the 5Ds and 5Ds R will cost $3,699.00 and $3,899.00, respectively.

This is compared to the 5D Mark III selling for $3,100 and the D810 selling for $3,000, so I definitely think the pricing is reasonable.

Both models are expected to be available as of June.

As for the new feature details:

  • Shutter durability rated at 150,000 (same as the 5D MKIII)
  • Video features: 1080/30p, 720/60p
  • Built-in intervalometer allows adjustments from 1 second to 99:59:59 hours
  • Time lapse movies can be created from 2 – 3,600 photos, with a max playback time of 2:30 minutes
  • Image dimensions are 8712 x 5813 pixels
  • Mirror vibration control system
  • Arbitrary Release Time Lag Setting in Mirror Lock mode – 1/8, 1/4, 1/2, one and two seconds

Hi res, but low ISO, low FPS, low dynamic range. I’m a little disappointed.

    $700 more than a D800 is not competitive !
Max 30 sec shutter means goodbye to long exposures.

I love all kind of technical development. But this camera is not what I would have wished for.
I would love to see a fullframe DSLR with the same constant AF as the 70D or 7D own.
Also I would like to have the ability to film in RAW, just like with a black-magic camera. 4K is not jet interesting in my opinion, but RAW would be awesome. Also a higher Framerate at normal movie-mode would be nice, 30 frames is realy not that much on such a expensive camera.
