Whenever we go to a trade show, we always know Blackmagic will have a nice big stand with a comfy seating area where we can relax and have a chat. So, this year we stopped by the Blackmagic stand at IBC 2024 to stop by and chat with them about their new toys.

We spoke about the Blackmagic Pyxis 6K ($2,995), as well as several products from the URSA line, including the URSA Cine 12K LF ($14,995), and URSA Cine 17K ($29,995). And as they had a prototype with them, we also spoke with them about the recently announced URSA Cine Immersive.

There seems to be a race at the moment to produce higher and higher resolution sensors. When TVs are mostly capped at 4K – and many people still think that’s overkill – why do we need 8K, 12K and 17K sensors? Well, cameras like this is why.

Blackmagic says they’ve been in collaborating with Apple for a while about creating immersive hardware. And while the URSA Cine Immersive will allow you to produce 3D footage for a wide range of uses, including regular movies, the Apple Vision Pro is its main target.

The development of this camera will continue through the company’s beta program, but there’s no word on an actual release date yet, but it won’t be this year. It’s going to be at some point during 2025.

Blackmagic’s new compact 6K cine camera, the Pysix 6K is now shipping. We first saw this camera at NAB 2024, earlier this year. It had just been announced and looked very impressive. Well, now you can get your hands on one.

The L mount version is here first. The PL mount will be coming soon, with the EF mount version to follow after that. It’s nice to see Blackmagic’s jumped head first into the L mount alliance, making gear for its lenses before the typical mounts.

Likewise, the Blackmagic URSA Cine 12K LF is now also shipping. They’ve started reaching a few lucky individuals already, but the rest of you who pre-ordered should start to see yours arriving soon. Blackmagic says that a number of production companies are already starting to work with the new camera with great results.

The Blackmagic URSA Cine 17K is not ready for prime time just yet. It’s expected to come towards the end of the year and it’ll be a beast of a camera. 64mm IMAX equivalent sensor with 17K of resolution. Pricing has been announced, and it’s not going to be an inexpensive camera by any means.

So, that’s all the updates for now.
