If you’ve been wondering what Nikon’s new camera, the D810, provides the in the video realm, you are gonna drool over this film from Preston Kanak. The movie called Every Moment Counts was shot entirely on the D810. The film is (wonderfully) graded so it does not really show the movie ‘out of camera’ but it definitely shows what the camera is capable of, in some challenging conditions. (Look for low light, contrasty scenes and fine details)
The movie, aside from displaying impressive Nikon stance is certainly a gem:
Every Moment Counts is a short that follows the journey of a cod fisherman who, after being enthralled in the industry for years, is considering putting away his gear for the last time. The film will follow this characters journey of passion and drive through his many years living and breathing on the open sea.

In my opinion – D810 is awesome photo camera.
But, when it comes to video – I don’t see it as smart investment. Sure, it has big sensor and has possibility, to attach external recorder. But, the fact, that It can’t shoot 4k is a big NO, for a 3000$ video camera, in year 2014.
Even more – I think, that Nikon has dropped the ball, because implementing 4k video, faster than Canon, is the only way, to compete in DSLR video field.
I have to disagree with you here. Sure 4k is great for some reasons like reframing but until there are more devices that are capable of delivering 4k to audiences, there is not a huge need for it for many people. For me, although it is nice for some things and I like working with it, until clients start to request it (or more of my clients request it), I will be sticking with 1080.
Your clients may not ask for 4k right now, but what about half year, from now? Some people may not like it, but 4k is slowly becoming mainstream.
Other argument is about basic future proofing of your content: It may not matter, for short term commercial work. But, when it comes to content, that’s made for long term consumption – it would be waste of resources, to shoot a movie in a format, that is already starting to become irrelevant.
As the GH4 has demonstrated, there is plenty of reason to shoot in 4k even if you only deliver at 1080p. Furthermore, if you’re buying a D810 today, you may expect it to carry you as a camera body for 5+ years. Having 4k would help “futureproof” the camera a little bit.
I see noise inferno…
Oh man, I really need to invest in this camera. I have a d90 right now, and I’m pushing the limits with it, video is aweful, and noise capability is bad compared to a newer nikon model. It’s just hard to collect the cash to buy one haha.
