We reported a while ago that the monkey selfie case could come to an end. And finally, this happened. After two years of court battle, David Slater, PETA and Slater’s co-defendant Blurb have reached a settlement. Slater has agreed to donate 25% of any future revenue from the famous selfies to charities that protect the habitats of crested macaques.
PETA and Slater reached the settlement before the federal appeals court could rule who owns the photos. On Monday, PETA’s lawyers asked the court to dismiss the case. According to Engadget, Slater and PETA stated that the case raised “cutting-edge issues” about animal rights and that they agree on the idea of expanding animal rights.
So, after two years, one of the most bizarre copyright-related cases is over. It has raised many questions and issues and made us rethink the notion of copyright ownership. Sadly, it has caused lots of stress and loss for the photographer, but I’m glad he can finally leave this behind.

PETA is just some bitch ass motherfuckers… without the gear of the photographer, the monkey would have selfied some red ass… That’s blackmail!!! PETA is a tick sucking blood out of people…. go ‘head and sue your monkey of a president of US of A and ask for money from him!

What a bloody discgrace.
I’m all for animal rights, mostly because they don’t have the same hang up’s that we do, mainly money. PETA you have made yourself look just like the monsters you are defending the animals against.
So in the end, what I learned is that you should just lie and say you used a remote trigger.

That’s barely half a victory. By now I’m sure all the photographer wanted was to get the “monkey off his back”. Who the hell is PETA to make him give 25% of anything? Who named them the animal photography police? It’s absolutely pathetic. It was a non-issue to begin with.

with all the money it cost him so far, PETA should pay him. this is just ridiculous.
But … but … he doesn’t own the copyright so how would he get revenue?
The Constitution allows copyrights to “To promote the progress of science and useful arts”. Since monkeys would not respond to the incentive of copyrights by creating more art, I can’t imagine how the law would allow them to own a copyright.
So PETA takes 25% of the sales from this photograph from this photographer. Since he didn’t own the copyright and there monkey can’t, PETA is claiming 25% from this photographer selling a free image. Pathetic!!!

PETA is the real monkey’s arse in this case.
the guy offered to pay 25% of future sales to a charity. PETA didnt win a thing and courts ruled in favour of the photographer. all peta did is waste tens of thousands on a court case they could never win that could have been spent on protecting the animals they serve. idiots prob after a new mansion off his sales
This guy screwed up by announcing “selfie” to get some extra publicity for the shot. However, who really could have forseen a group of wackos throwing millions of dollars of lawyer time into it (all funded by other wackos) in their own publicity grab? This is what happens when an entire society lets themselves get ruled by lawyers. Sadly nobody seems to have learned from the ancient Romans.
The morals of the story …
The interest with unlimited funds to spend on legal fees always wins regardless of the law.
Don’t give ANY details of how you got the shot.
So two years of high publicity for PETA, whilst destroying Slater’s business?! I hope they’re proud asses!!
