It’s official: Verizon now owns Yahoo and Flickr

It’s been reported before that Verizon was about to acquire Yahoo. Now it’s officially done – Verizon is a new owner of Yahoo, along with Flickr, their (once) popular photo sharing platform. Verizon has acquired Yahoo for $4.48 billion, and they plan to combine it with AOL and create a new service called Oath.
As a consequence of the merger of Yahoo and AOL, 2100 employees will be made redundant. But in spite of this, the CEO of AOL, Tim Armstrong, has a plan of creating one of the biggest brand-focused companies in the world. According to DPReview, Oath’s goal is to compete with other major services like Facebook and Google, which Yahoo obviously wasn’t capable of.
As for Flickr, there is still no news of changes. For now, there are no announcements about the change of pricing or the layout of the platform. What I’ve only notices (yes, I still use Flickr) is that they have altered the look of the profile page a bit.
In recent years, Flickr’s popularity is rapidly dropping, so it’s questionable whether it’s still profitable. From here, there are probably only two possible solutions (and maybe I’m too optimistic). First, Verizon could give it a makeover, try and make it more active and raise its popularity again. Or second, they could decide it’s not profitable and shut it down.
I still love Flickr, probably because that was the platform that made me start sharing my images in the first place. But frankly, it seems like soon there will only be crickets and tumbleweed left. Still, I would love to see it bring its old popularity back, and it’s what I’ll be hoping for from this acquisition.

Flickr could not possible be worse. The biggest dump on the internet. Only Yahoo could produce such a huge mess that Flickr is.
The only worse thing than Yahoo’s Flickr is Yahoo itself.
But I am really nostalgic about Flickr, that’s why I still use the account. :(

both are dead…Yahoo sucks.. the Yahoo mail is the worst out there. Yahoo Killed Flickr.
Yahoo killed Flickr and then sold out to Verizon. Not a bad exit strategy for them. I wonder what Verizon was thinking, unless they need to offset their gouging mobile service with losses on Yahoo/Flickr.
I use Flickr now like an archive for my images to search through them by name and check the date (and if they change the searching algorithm it would be better). I’ve suspended my renewal once they changed their layout and everything. Whatever speed my internet is on, Flickr is always slow to load.

I actually like Flickr. Of course, part of the issues is most of the other photo sites aren’t much better. Nice place to share photos.

I use a pro account for additional photo backup
I started a new pro account 6 months ago. My old one – 12/yo, 4m views – was so cluttered. Verizon just added some new features. What’s not to like?
Please make Flickr great again. It’s too slow!

Verizon should remove all the current managers TOTALLY and replace with fresh outsiders.
Flickr is still around? I mean, even someone like me can ftp my photos to the webspace I get with my email. – No ad photo hosting that I control. Not room for hundreds of pics, but enough to rotate a bunch through.
