The PEN Could Be Making a Comeback at OM System

OM System appears ready to bring its PEN line back into the spotlight.

The company has announced an event for September 9, while a new teaser traces the history of the PEN series before ending on the silhouette of a camera labeled for 2026. That does not officially confirm a new PEN, but the timing, imagery and a recent camera registration have given the long running series plenty of reason to attract attention.

The 17-second teaser looks back at the development of the PEN, which began in 1959 with the original half frame film camera. It then moves through the series’ history before showing a silhouetted camera identified as a 2026 model.

That makes a new PEN camera the obvious interpretation, although OM System has not yet confirmed the product itself. The company currently lists the PEN E P7 as its PEN model, describing it as a compact interchangeable lens camera built around the Micro Four Thirds system.

A September 9 event would give OM System an opportunity to formally introduce the new camera, assuming the teaser is indeed pointing to a PEN successor.

The PEN name also has a long history in compact photography. The original 1959 camera used half frame film, allowing photographers to get twice as many exposures from a standard roll. The modern digital PEN cameras have kept the emphasis on a small body and interchangeable lenses while moving to digital imaging.

A new OM System camera has already been registered

There is also a more concrete clue behind the rumors. Photo Rumors reported on August 22 that OM System registered a new digital camera in Singapore under the internal code IM042. The registration was filed with the Infocomm Media Development Authority under certification number ESER/26/3353.

According to Photo Rumors, the registration identifies the product only as an OM SYSTEM digital camera. It does not reveal its final retail name or specifications. The registration also indicates wireless connectivity through Wi Fi or Bluetooth, which is consistent with modern OM System interchangeable lens cameras.

The registration is particularly interesting because previous OM System camera registrations can be linked to models including the OM 1, OM 5, OM 3 and OM 5 Mark II. IM042 is the next unidentified entry in that sequence.

Photo Rumors also pointed to earlier reports suggesting that OM System has been considering a new PEN camera. The outlet previously reported that the company had discussed plans for a future PEN and that a PEN F successor remained under consideration.

What could the new PEN be?

There is currently not enough official information to say what specifications the camera will have. The teaser does not reveal the sensor, resolution, autofocus system, lens mount, price or body design.

That leaves plenty of room for speculation, but the safest conclusion is simply that OM System has a new camera coming and has chosen the PEN’s history to frame its announcement. The question now is not just what the new PEN will look like, but how much of its 1959 character will survive in a modern digital camera.
