James and Mira Raley travel the world while documenting their journeys on the Honey Badger Diaries.
As of this week they will be travelling a bit lighter following their DJI Phantom‘s encounter with a pride of curious lions.
While the GoPro survived the crash and a few nibbles from the giant cats, the drone was most likely recovered in several pieces.
In the comments section of their YouTube video, the Raleys state that the low flight was accidental and assure us that the “pilot is attending a tree and wildlife avoidance course”.
They sum up the experience saying “we thought that a quick flight over the group of huge male lions was a good idea. We were wrong”.
The incident took place at Antelope Park in Zimbabwe.

For those who missed it, drones don’t do well around kangaroos either.

Must learn to fly first :)
A group of lions is not called a pack…
You are correct, of course. It’s been changed.
Must learn not to tease lions…
I don’t think tormenting a pride of lions with a drone is very nice. Apparently, karma agrees.
Moron! You never fly drones low around animals or people. The owner got what he deserved!
wouldn’t let me see the videos — said they were private.
