Amazon cancels all orders for $249 Sony 85mm f/1.8 FE, gives buyers $20 gift cards instead

If you ordered a $550 Sony 85mm f/1.8 FE from Amazon for $249, it seems that you aren’t getting it after all. Even though this isn’t its first pricing error, Amazon has canceled all orders of the $249 Sony lens because it was “displayed at an incorrect price.”

All customers who had ordered the lens at the lower price got the following email from Amazon:

Hello,

We recently discovered that an error caused the following item(s) to be displayed at an incorrect price:

Sony FE 85mm f/1.8 Lens (SEL85F18/2)

In this case, we’re unable to offer this item for the incorrectly posted price. Therefore, we’ve canceled your order for this item. We’re sorry about this. At any given time, despite our best efforts, a small number of the millions of items on our site may be mispriced.

To make up for any inconvenience, we’re adding a $20 Amazon.com Gift Card to your account. This balance will automatically apply to your next order at Amazon.com.

We hope to see you again soon.

This is strange to see because Amazon often honors its price mistakes, even much bigger than this one. Back in July, for example, Prime Day deals had a bunch of pricing errors. But even then, the users reported that they received their orders even though they paid a fraction of their regular price.

But hey, if Amazon canceled your $249 Sony lens, at least you have a $20 gift card. Perhaps you can use it on the next Prime Day and hope for the pricing errors just like the ones in July.
