Stanley Kubrick is one of the most iconic directors to ever grace the film industry. His unusual shots and techniques might seem unorthodox, but they’re what made him who he is.

As a tribute to just one of Kubrick’s many distinct compositions and shooting techniques, Spanish filmmaker Jorge Luengo Ruiz has put together a supercut of what is referred to as the ‘Kubrick Gaze’.

This ‘gaze’ tends to be a closeup shot of a subject, where it appears as though they are looking directly into the eyes of the viewer. The idea is that this device is used to draw in the audience, a trick that not only works, but further helps Kubrick’s films stand out as unusually gripping.

Ruiz has created dozens of other mashups and tributes, many of which revolve around Kubrick’s works, so head on over to his Vimeo channel to see more.

That’s the “narcissistic/predatory stare”, which only psychopaths, sociopaths and narcissists are able to show you. Plus well-trained actors.
Kubrick simply recognised it and implemented it into his movies to make his characters more believable.
Calling it the “kubrick stare” shows a complete lack of knowledge on what you’re talking about.
