Breakthrough Photography has already had their, well, breakthrough, but they’re looking to push the boundaries even further.
On December 14th 2014 the San Francisco-based startup finished a very successful Kickstarter campaign for their then-new collection of neutral density and circular polarizer filters. Now, they’re improving their offerings with a new circular polarizer filter that they claim to be the ‘world’s sharpest and most color neutral.’
It’s called the X3 and like its predecessors, it’s being funded via Kickstarter.
This circular polarizer utilizes an almost identical design to Breakthrough Photography’s previous model, including the use of CNC machined brass with an electroplated matte black finish on the threads.
To ensure it lives up to its bold claim, Breakthrough Photography uses Schott B270 optical glass from Germany, with MRC16 coatings for reducing reflections and nanotec coatings, which are said to help repel dirt and water.
At the core of the X3 Circular Polarizer is a CrystalVision CPL film, said to be the key to giving the most color neutral image possible without a decline in quality across the board.

The X3 CPL has already far surpassed its funding goal. It comes in twelve different sizes: 39mm, 46mm, 49mm, 52mm, 58mm, 62mm, 67mm, 72mm, 77mm, 82mm, 95mm and 105mm.
Unfortunately, a handful of sizes are sold out through Kickstarter, but you can still get your hands on what models remains, whose prices range from $89 to $159.
Once funded, manufacturing will begin, which should set up for an approximate shipping time of December 2015. For more information and to secure your filter, head on over to the X3 CPF Kickstarter campaign.
