5K RAW 24p is coming for the $150 Canon EOS M

If you are a fan of Magic Lantern, you know that this piece of software can greatly enhance video on Canon cameras. Why shouldn’t you be a fan, it can give your 5dmkIII 4K raw?). But now, Magic Lantern is reported to enabling 5K RAW on the (older, $150 on Amazon)  Canon EOS M. (see the ML post here)

If you take a look at the screens below, you’ss see that there is now a new option for 5K 3×1 24FPS recording. 5K, stands for 5K footage, 3×1 stands for 3 pixels binning and 24 is the FPS, not bad for a sub $150 camera.

looking further into the screens we can see that the recording is done at 10 bit, and at an “anamorphic” ratio of 2.35:1.

EOSHD also reports that the person who tipped them thinks that an aliasing-free 5K mode will eventually come as well.

The bigger news is about the 1×3 1736×2150 preset… it really means aliasing free 5208×2150 footage when corrected in Mlv App in post. For continuous action record as described in the post

Even if installing Magic Lantern could void your warranty, it’d be worth the risk.

      actually, https://www.diyphotography.net/dear-canonnikonpanasonic-can-i-use-custom-firmware-my-camera/

Good to see Canon doesn’t consider the warranty voided and quite understandable that it will not cover damage as a result of installing Magic Lantern. Installing Magic Lantern is like shooting underwater (with a case). It can lead to great results but if something goes wrong when using it this way and the camera gets damaged, can’t blame Canon for making a faulty product. Also nice to see Canon willing to offer to fix the camera (for a fee).

Disappointed to see Nikon and Panasonic considering the warranty void if the camera is bricked when installing ML.

    I would rather have 1080p 120fps than 5K.

    • MaRown

I do 100% agree. I hope ML takes this to ponder

    I don’t care

How many ‘normal’ computers could process/edit that much information? Mine won’t. 🤔😩

  • Collin McLaren

    Excuse me what?

  • Graeme Simpson

1080 at 100/120 would have been better. I’d have not sold mine then

    • MaRown

      Yesss, i love slow mo B-Roll 1080p

  • Joe De Diego

I still have a eos-m (first version) so i think that’s awesome. True i haven’t used the camera in over 2 years but this is exactly why i kept it because magic lantern just keeps getting better.

    4K or 5K for home videos??? Meaningless… marketing bullshit…

  • Joe De Diego

Now if only ML could fix the terrible high iso performance.
