“This is like a small personal thing, I was hoping for favor job”
“This could be really good for your career”
“I might be really successful one day”
“Maybe I’ll need another job and I’ll call you first”
“I’m sorry I’m not some wealthy hedge fund manager with all this disposable income”
If you’re a photographer and you haven’t heard any of these sentences, you must be living in an isolated cabin with no other humans around.
This humorous video makes you realize how ridiculous some requests can be by replacing the photographer/graphic designer/model/any creative freelancer (pick your favorite) with a professional assassin.
Be warned, the video includes a tiny bit of violence:
Had College Humor titled this video “Guy Who’s Too Cheap To Pay A Photographer”, some people would get a chuckle out of it while many would see it as a true-to-life reenactment of pretty common situations, but nobody would be surprised.
Change the freelancer’s job to an assassin and suddenly the freebie request seems outlandishly odd.
The subject of working for free is a sensitive one and the not something that will be unanimously agreed upon anytime soon. Some Photographers strongly oppose the concept and others think it could be good for you, but everybody will agree that some requests are so ridiculous you have to wonder whether the person offering the “deal” is serious (or sane).
So, next time a potential client makes you a freebie offer you can’t refuse (without laughing your ass off) ask him if he’d extend the same offer to an assassin.
