The DJI Mavic 2 Pro was made with high image quality in mind. And what happens when you modify the Mavic 2 Pro’s camera to shoot infrared? Well, you get a stunning and surreal aerial footage. Philip Bloom had his drone camera converted and here’s the video showing just how amazing it looks to shoot infrared video from air.
Philip used a Mavic 2 Pro modified by Kolari Vision. You can either have them modify your current drone or buy one that has already been modified. The Kolari Vision team writes that they can convert your drone’s camera and perform focus recalibration to infinity. The camera gets converted to full-spectrum only with the addition of six IR filters. Philip explains that you’ll need the filters, especially the “hot mirror IR” one if you want to shoot with normal colors.
As you can see in the video above, the infrared footage is pretty amazing. But buying a modified Mavic 2Pro isn’t cheap, so you may wonder: “Can I do this in post?” Well, sort of. Philip made a comparison to demonstrate the difference between the Mavic 2 Pro footage in the normal spectrum, with an infrared LUT applied, and in full spectrum IR and IR Chrome filter. While you can recreate the look in post, it’s only up to a point. You have to admit it looks so much better with the modified drone.
I think that aerial footage alone opens new possibilities and has a lot of creative applications. And when you add an infrared camera to it, you can get even more creative and unusual photos and videos. How do you like the infrared aerial video? Would you have your drone modified so you can shoot something like this?
