It feels like this thing has been teased and announced about a dozen times over the last couple of years but now the Sony Airpeak S1 Professional drone is now available to pre-order starting at $8,999.99. And that doesn’t include a gimbal. If you want to get the Gremsy Gimbal T3 kit to go along with it, that’s going to cost you an extra $2,200 bringing your total cost up to $11,199.98.

The Sony Airpeak S1 was first unveiled back in January and it’s taken almost an entire year, with a sort-of release six months ago, for it to actually open up for pre-orders. And beyond “coming soon”, there still doesn’t appear to be an actual shipping date yet, so actually getting one into your hands might still be a little way out.

There’s no new information on the gimbal. All of that was released back in June and tests show some impressive performance. The only real difference now is that you can put your money down on one to get yourself on the list for when they do start shipping. If the Sony Airpeak release is like just about every other electronics product over the last year and a half, though, even with a $9-11.2K price tag, there’ll be shortages.

DroneSony Airpeak S1

Obstacle avoidance5-way stereo cameras (Front, back, left, right and down), Infrared range sensor

Max payload5lb 9.4oz
Max takeoff weight15lb 5.7oz
Dimensions (folded)~25.5" diagonal wheelbase without propellers

So, if this is the kind of drone you need and you’re willing and able to spend the cash, you’ll want to jump on this sooner rather than later if you want to be amongst the first to receive them once they start shipping. Otherwise you could find yourself on a waiting list of several months.

The Sony Airpeak S1 is available to pre-order now for $8,999.99, or if you want the Airpeak S1 and the Gremsy gimbal together, it’s $11,199.98. A shipping date is… unknown.
