The Atomos Neon can record 8K 60fps ProRes RAW with new Master Control Unit

At Cine Gear 2019, Atomos announced a new line of monitoring and recording displays. The new line is called Neon, and they’re all true 10-bit displays. The Neons range in size from a full HD model at 17″ to 4K DCI on the 24″ and 31″ sizes, with 4K UHD on the 55″.
By default, these Neon monitors will come with a 4K master control unit, similar to that found in the likes of the Shogun 7. But a new 8K master control unit will soon be available, turning any Neon screen into an 8K resolution recorder, capable of recording at 60 frames per second.
These are the first true 10-bit displays we’re seeing from Atomos. Even their top-end Shogun 7 is an 8+2 FRC display., there are four sizes with different resolutions.
- 17″ – Full HD (2048 x 1080) – 142ppi
- 24″ – 4K DCI (4096 x 2160) – 193ppi
- 31″ – 4K DCI (4096 x 2160) – 147ppi
- 55″ – 4K UHD (3840 x 2160) – 84ppi
The screens are built with an aluminium alloy chassis and polycarbonate back plate, so they sound fairly rugged. For mounting points they’re fully compatible with ARRI, and has 3 left, 3 right, 7 top and 7 bottom VESA mount. And they record ProRes RAW.
They come supplied with a master control unit that offers HDMI 10-bit uncompressed as well as 12G-SDI 12-bit 4K RAW up to 60p. Pretty much the same spec as the Shogun 7. But the Neons have will have an optional master control unit available bumping this up to 8K ProRes RAW.
This makes it the world’s first 8K ProRes RAW monitor-recorder combo. And that claim doesn’t come cheap. Only the smallest one, the 17″, is available to pre-order now for $3,999, so far. The 24″ will be $6,499, the 31″ will be $7,999 and the massive 55″ will come with a $16,999 price tag.
Way out of my budget, but I’d love to check them out in person.

Way too expensive for a grading monitor or as a on set ProRes recorder. Think I’ll wait until the day they can innovate enough to get an 8K MCU into a smaller 7″ or 5″ monitor. Otherwise these oversized displays are useless.
