Think tank release two sizes of Speedtop crossbody camera bags

Think Tank has just announced two brand-spanking new cross-body camera bags. Called the SpeedTop Crossbody series, the bags come in two different sizes and boast a number of new innovative features. Generally, cross-body bags are best for easy access and convenience.

They are perfect for quickly accessing your camera and a couple of lenses when you need to, for example, if you’re doing event and wedding photography. Think Tank knows this, which is why one of the best features of these bags is the silent magnetic lid that enables quick and quiet access to your gear. All one-handed and without the need to open a zip.

Now that you’ve got your camera, lenses and lights, you’ll need something to store them in, and that’s where bags come in. Bags are one of those items that many photographers collect. There’s no such thing as the perfect bag, just bags that are perfect for specific uses. Here I’m going to show you some of my favourites from the last year along with a few that have been consistently useful and reliable for us at DIYP.

Remember that there are sales on right now, so some of the links show much lower prices than those listed here. Be sure to check all of them.

It might be a little bit early to start thinking about stocking stuffers for the photographer in your life, or perhaps to even treat yourself. But while everybody’s in a buying mood, it’s worth thinking about doing now so you’re not driving around on Christmas Eve looking for somewhere open that still has something worth getting.

So, here are some of the low budget items that we use all the time for our photography, either for DIYP coverage or for our personal work. It is by no means an exhaustive list of the inexpensive products we use, but these have been the most valuable to us. So, get them for yourself while you’re in a buying mood, or start buying your photographer friends their little Christmas gifts now!

This clever cube turns any bag into a camera bag

There are many photography bags. Just go out and try to have your pick, you’ll be at awe. I think that choosing your first camera bag can be an overwhelming decision for the new photographer. (More experianmced photographers don’t choose a photography bag, they buy them all).

This is where something like the new Stash Master 13L from Mindshift gear can help. You can keep your old (non-photography) bag and eat it too. Essentially the Stash Master is a padded cube with a zipper on top. It’s kinda the right size to fit in almost any bag and convert it into a camera carrying device.

How to DIY some large wheels onto the Think Tank Logistics Manager roller case

The Think Tank Logistics Manager 30 is my absolute favorite when it comes to all the camera bags, stand bags, photo bags and other bags I own for my flash equipment, tripods and cameras.

However, it is just like almost all rolling cases, mostly made to be transported inside airports, offices or other places with a flat and even floor. With small and silly undersized skateboard-like wheels it immediately becomes hard or impossible to use it on gravel roads or a bumpy asphalt. Not to mention in a meadow with grass.

Late last year my wife and I had to say goodbye to one of our beloved dogs Sophie. She was far too young and her loss was devastating. After several months one of my breeder clients (Kristen from Zero Gravity Australian Shepherds) announced a litter coming. I have photographed many of her litters and have used her dogs as models in many of my concept shoots. We have always admired her dogs so we decided it was time to add a puppy to our home.

The Photography Show is the UK’s biggest annual show. Held each year at the Birmingham NEC, it attracts all of the well-known brands, and a few newer ones. And while the main focus of shows now for me are the people I get to see and hang out with, you can’t ignore the gear. Because, like most shows, it’s packed to the gills with it.

DIYP went to The Photography Show 2017 last month, and we picked up seven of the most interesting products for your enjoyment:

Think Tank FINALLY adds a laptop pocket to their airport international

I am not going to hide it, I am a big Think Tank fan. In fact the bag we used to carry around in photokina is a ThinkTank Roller Derby. I do own an Airport International as well (see review here), but if I need a laptop, it was out of the question. It has no laptop pocket.

So the fact that Think Tank finally added a laptop pocket to the bag will probably make a lot of people happy.

It’s summer once again and the fortunate among you will be hitting the road, hopping on planes, maybe even boarding a ship or two, and getting the hell out of Dodge for some hopefully stress-free rest and relaxation. Regardless of whether your travels are taking you around the world or just a day’s drive from home, it’s important to not only pack your camera gear carefully, but to also spend time putting some safeguards in place to make sure that you and your gear not only make beautiful travel photography together, and that you both get home safe and sound.
