There have been rumours about Sigma releasing a 50mm f/1.4 DG DN Art series lens for mirrorless cameras for a little while. A couple of weeks ago, we saw some of the specs leak and now, thanks to Sony Alpha Rumors, we have our first photo of the lens showing what it’ll actually look like. It’s a significant design change from the Sigma 50mm f/1.4 DG HSM Art for DSLRs, showing quite a different exterior.

The interior is also different, with a new optical formula with more elements in more groups. Sigma has also announced a Sigma Stage Online event for February 7th, with a description talking about discovering new products. So an announcement for something is definitely imminent. Could it be the new 50mm f/1.4 DG DN Art lens?

Sony A7C II announcement rumoured for some time during 2023

The Sony A7C has proven to be quite popular. As a full-frame camera designed primarily for vlogging, it’s not much of a surprise. Even though there are many full-frame cameras out there now with which you can vlog, the A7C kind of stands alone in its design that’s especially well suited to the task. And despite being smaller, when it comes to video, it largely keeps up with the Sony A7 III.

Well, it appears that we’ve got an A7C II on the way at some point in 2023, according to new rumours over on Sony Alpha Rumors. It’s expected to have the same body and overall form factor as the original Sony A7C but with specs closer to that of the Sony A7 IV. This should mean improved video (perhaps including 10-Bit 4:2:2 and 4K 60p) and better autofocus.

First photo leaks of Sigma’s upcoming 50mm f/1.4 DG DN Art for mirrorless

The first image has leaked of Sigma’s upcoming 50mm f/1.4 DG DN Art lens for mirrorless cameras. Along with last week’s leaked specs, it looks like we could be getting very close to an official announcement. The older Sigma 50mm f/1.4 DG HSM Art for DLSRs has been a regular fixture in the bags of many photographers over the years. Photographers who’ve been begging for Sigma to update it for mirrorless systems.

It looks like this probably won’t be the lens that Sigma uses to expand into the Nikon Z space, as the rumours only suggest the usual Leica L and Sony E mounts so far, but it’s nice to see the lens finally appearing. But now we can see that it appears to have an actual aperture ring which shows a range of f/1.4 down to f/16. Whether or not it’s clicked or stepless, we’ll have to wait and see.

Specs leak for Sigma’s upcoming 50mm f/1.4 DG DN Art series lens for mirrorless cameras

The Sigma 50mm f/1.4 DG HSM Art has been a staple among the gear collections of many photographers since its release back in 2014. It’s no accident, either. It’s an excellent lens offering fantastic results. But today, it has one big flaw. It’s designed for DSLRs and not mirrorless cameras. Sure, you can use adapters, and there is an E-Mount version, but it’s still just basically the DSLR lens with an adapter bolted onto the end.

It looks like Sigma’s looking to finally replace this lens, however, with a 50mm f/1.4 DG DN Art lens designed specifically for mirrorless cameras. Naturally, this means Sony E and Leica L mounts. As is often the way, a few specs of the new lens have leaked in advance of an official announcement, but there’s no word yet on whether this lens will be the first of Sigma’s rumoured expansion into Z mount.

Sigma product announcement scheduled for Jan 12th – First Sigma Z mount lens on the way?

Sigma Global has announced a new Sigma Stage online event for January 12th at 9pm JST. That means noon for the UK, 7am Eastern or 4am Pacific. As per usual, Sigma hasn’t given any hints as to what might be coming, simply saying “New Products Presentation” – suggesting we might see more than one thing – but recent rumours suggest we might be seeing the new Sigma 60-600mm f/4.5-6.3 DG DN OS Sports lens.

The DG DN designation means it’ll be a full-frame lens designed specifically for mirrorless cameras. But what’s particularly special about this lens – other than being an update to the past popular DSLR lens – is that it looks set to be Sigma’s first lens for Nikon Z mount cameras. If it turns out to be true, then “new products” might be many of their existing DG DN lenses also being announced for Z Mount.

Leaked spec sheet for upcoming Panasonic Lumix S5 Mark II says phase detect AF is definitely coming

Well, it looks like the announcement is going to be coming quite soon. After the recent photo leak, a complete set of specs for the Panasonic Lumix S5 Mark II has also been leaked. Also, we now know what the differences will be between the S5 Mark II and the S5 Mark II X. The big news though is that, yes, Panasonic finally seems to be putting Phase Detect Autofocus into a mirrorless camera.

This is good news for the future of Panasonic shooters, who’ve often complained about Panasonic’s proprietary DFD tech that only works with Panasonic lenses – and it not really working at all, really, when shooting video. The addition of phase detection autofocus appears to be the single biggest difference between this and the original Panasonic Lumix S5, but there are a couple of others.

Photo leaks of upcoming Panasonic S5 Mark II ahead of February release

Panasonic is getting ready to announce a new S5 Mark II L mount mirrorless camera. Building on the popularity of the original S5, the new camera might actually come with a whole new autofocus system. Panasonic recently introduced Phase Detect autofocus for the first time in their AW-UE160W/K PTZ camera. The big hope right now is that we’ll start to see PDAF also coming to Panasonic’s L mount range.

Not only is there supposed to be a new Panasonic S5 Mark II, but it’s also being reported that we’ll see an S5 Mark II X, too. Exactly what the differences will be between the two models is unknown, as no specs for either have really leaked yet, but what has leaked is a photo of what is reported to be the upcoming S5 Mark II.

Leaked photos show Laowa to release 19mm f/2.8 ultra-wide lens for GFX on December 13th

It looks like Venus Optics is set to release a new Laowa lens next week, according to product announcement images. And leaked photos and specs say that it’s going to be a 19mm f/2.8 ultra-wide lens for Fuji GFX medium format cameras. This isn’t the only lens Laowa makes for Fuji GFX or even the widest angle, but it does add a whole extra stop of brightness over the Laowa 17mm f/4 Zero-D GFX.

The new lens is rumoured to be the Laowa 19mm f/2.8 Zero-D GFX, and it’s expected to cost about the same as the 17mm mentioned above. Despite having a wider aperture, though, it’s also expected to be significantly lighter, weighing only 546g vs the 17mm f/4’s rather hefty 829g. There is also another ultra-wide GFX lens from Laowa, the 15mm f/4.5R Zero-D Shift Lens, but we’ll get back to that later.

Sigma to release its first Nikon Z mount lens, the 60-600mm f/4.5-6.3 Sports in 2023

Well, this certainly has taken a while but it looks like Sigma’s getting ready to release their first Z mount autofocus lens in 2023. And it’s not just a Z mount version of an existing lens – although, I expect those will come in time – but a new lens announcement. According to reports, Sigma will be announcing a 60-600mm f/4.5-6.3 DG DN OS Sports lens in 2023 – a mirrorless refresh of the Sigma 60-600mm f/4.5-6.3 DG OS HSM Sports for DSLRs.

So far, the rumours say that it will be coming in Nikon Z and Sony E mounts, with no mention of anything else. But given that Sigma’s in the L mount alliance and has two L mount mirrorless cameras of their own – the Sigma fp and fp L – I can’t imagine they won’t release it in L mount flavour, too.

It looks like Chinese lens manufacturer AstrHori has a couple of new lenses on the way for mirrorless systems, including the Canon RF mount. The first is the AstrHori 12mm f/2.8 fisheye lens, with a possible announcement date coming soon, according to rumours on Weibo. Images have been released, along with a basic set of specs. It’s expected to be released in Sony E, Leica L, Canon RF and Nikon Z mount.

The other is the AstrHori 18mm f/8 Shift lens. This one is also expected to be announced soon and offers a 99.2° field of view with a shift feature to adjust the perspective of the shot. It’s not tilt-shift, though, just shift. This one is only going to be coming in Leica L and Canon RF mounts – no Sony or Nikon version – according to current rumours.
