Ricoh Theta X 360° camera comes with a big touch display, 60MP image capture and real-time stitching

Ricoh has today announced the new Ricoh Theta X 360° camera. Like the rest of the Ricoh 360° range, the Theta X is an all-in-one camera featuring a pair of lenses and sensors. It seems to represent a pretty big step up from previous Ricoh Theta cameras in terms of user interactivity, thanks to a great big new 2.25″ touchscreen display that lets you preview your shot (a Ricoh Theta first!) and better smartphone connectivity.

As well as the new touchscreen display, the Theta X brings along with it a couple of other firsts for Ricoh – although they are features that the competition has had for a while now. The battery is replaceable, so you’re not reliant on just an internal one. Swap out whenever you need. And while it still features internal storage (~46GB) it also sports a microSD card slot.

Ricoh announces major restructuring – is Pentax about to be reborn or are they just dying?

This announcement applies to Ricoh Japan only. For a statement from Ricoh USA, see the bottom of this post.

Ricoh, more specifically its Pentax brand of cameras, seem to have been particularly stuck in the past over the last few years. As every other single surviving camera manufacturer has made the transition to mirrorless, Pentax is still clinging onto its DSLRs. But is Pentax, as well as sister brand GR and parent brand Ricoh in more trouble than we thought?

A new press release from the company seems to suggest that they are struggling somewhat, but that they plan to do something about it, starting on April 1st. They’ve announced a major restructure of the company, stopping the mass-production of cameras and switching to a “workshop like” manufacturing process to strengthen the bond with its customers as well as promoting new Pentax and GR products in the coming future.

Ricoh files new lens patents – Is Pentax finally considering going mirrorless?

A few days ago, Ricoh filed a patent application in Japan for three new full-frame telephoto lenses, one of which is for mirrorless cameras. These aren’t the first they’ve filed, either, having filed patents for a couple of other mirrorless lenses a month ago. Could this be a turning point for Pentax, the one company that’s been holding onto DSLRs for dear life while the rest of the world goes mirrorless?

The three new lenses described by the patent aren’t particularly high end. They’re all variable aperture, although the one for mirrorless has a max variable aperture of f/2.8-4, so not too terrible. It’s doubtful, though that Pentax is planning to pursue the mirrorless market. At least, not yet.

Ricoh’s longer focal length GR IIIx and accessories are now available to pre-order

Since its initial announcement last month, many Ricoh fans have been waiting to be able to get their pre-orders in for the new Ricoh GR IIIx digital camera. Well, now, they can and it’ll cost you around $999. Over the GR III it sees a longer focal length, new face and eye-detection AF, improved in-camera editing and a bunch of new accessories.

The body of the camera hasn’t changed at all, and it still looks and feels largely the same, except when you shoot with it, you’ll have a slightly narrower field of view, going from the 28mm equivalent on the GR III to a 40mm equivalent on the GR IIIx – which is said to deliver “a new, innovative perspective perfect for dramatic, inspiring street photography”.

Ricoh has announced the new WG-7 waterproof camera – but only for Japan

Well, this is both interesting and also a shame, if it turns out to be the case. Ricoh has today announced the rumoured WG-7 waterproof compact camera. It’s capable of shooting for up to 2 hours continuously at a depth of up to 20 metres with impact resistance from drops of up to 2.1m and cold resistance down to -10°C.

But, it looks like it’s only being announced in Japan. At least for now. Pentax Rumors reports that the announcement is only for the Japanese Market. This could be backed up by the fact that it doesn’t appear to be on any of Ricoh’s other websites around the world. At least, not that I’ve been able to find.

The new neuralyzer-inspired Vecnos IQUI 360° camera is finally released

Vecnos, the company that spun off from Ricoh, has now finally announced the availability and complete specifications for the IQUI 360° camera they teased back in March. While the design is very reminiscent of MiB’s neuralyzer, this one’s designed to capture your memories, not erase them.

IQUI (pronounced “ee:kwee”), utilises the company’s IQUISPIN app for iOS and Android to make “shooting and sharing 360-degree content fun and easy”. Its small stature allows it to be easily portable, fitting in a purse or pocket just like a pen meaning you’ve no excuse to not have it with you.

Pentax reveals some details about their new flagship APS-C DSLR

In a video published to the Pentax Photography YouTube channel, Ricoh has revealed some more details on its upcoming new flagship APS-C DSLR. It’s the second part of a series by Pentax (Part 1 is lower down in this post) to “reinforce its commitment to DSLR photography“.

It might seem a little mad to cling onto DSLRs when the rest of the world is going mirrorless, but it seems that Pentax might be looking to capture the segment of the market that just doesn’t want to ditch the mirror.

The Ricoh GR series cameras have become extremely popular amongst street photographers over the last few years and have picked up a very loyal following. Those who have them love them and swear by them. The Ricoh GR III feels like it’s built specifically for street photography and when you look at some of the images they can make, it’s easy to see why.

Well, now, Ricoh has announced a new limited edition Ricoh GR III “Street Edition” kit which, as well as the camera includes a viewfinder module, a leather wrist strap and a rather obvious bright orange ring around the lens.

These are the best consumer 360° cameras you can buy right

360° cameras have come far in the last couple of years. I remember trying out the first version of the Ricoh Theta and thinking that it was a cool idea, but the quality and feature set just wasn’t there. When the YI 360 VR was released, offering 5.7K resolution, I felt they were finally starting to hit that point. But the tech that goes into 360° cameras has come much further since then.

But what are the top consumer picks when it comes to 360° cameras? In this video, Daniel The 360 Guy shows us his top five 360° cameras that you can get today. Daniel points out the good, the bad and the “ok” for each of the cameras. Possibly not surprisingly, there isn’t really a single “best” camera that’s good for all uses, but each has its own advantages and disadvantages over the others for different needs.
