With all the hype over the Leica/Sigma/Panasonic L mount alliance, it’s easy to forget about the Leica M mount. But not everybody’s forgotten about it. French startup PIXII SAS has announced their new Pixii camera. It’s a new digital rangefinder camera, based around the Leica M mount, and the specs have been released.
Sony E Mount wasn’t designed for full frame cameras, says Leica manager
One of the things that many people seem to have noticed about the new Nikon Z6/7 and Canon EOS R full frame mirrorless cameras is that the lens mount is huge. They look at their Sony with its relatively small E-Mount and wonder what the big deal is? Is it all just marketing hype from Nikon and Canon to sell super fast aperture lenses?
Maybe not. Leica manager Stephan Schulz backs up the idea that Sony’s E Mount wasn’t designed for full frame cameras in a recent interview with Reddotforum. He also explains why the L mount was developed to address the needs of full frame mirrorless cameras and lenses with autofocus.

Massive haul of Leica cameras and lenses stolen from Ffordes’ Scotland camera store
In the early hours of yesterday morning, thieves broke into the Ffordes Photographic Ltd camera shop in Inverness, Scotland. They took a huge amount of Leica cameras and lenses, and now the shop is appealing for help.
Ffordes initially took to Facebook to let people know what was going on and who to contact if they have any information. They have also now released an extensive list of all of the items that were stolen along with serial numbers.
Zenit and Leica join forces to create a digital rangefinder camera Zenit M

Leica’s new S3 medium format camera comes with a 64 megapixel upgrade
The Panasonic/Sigma/Leica alliance wasn’t the only thing that Leica spoke about yesterday during the Photokina press event. They’ve also officially announced the new Leica S3 medium format camera.
There still aren’t really many details, but it does increase the resolution from the S2’s 37.5MP up to 64MP. sure, it might not be quite as high resolution as the GFX 100S Fuji announced yesterday, but that’s still pretty impressive.
Sigma announces full frame Foveon camera with L Mount on the way – Canon EF to L adapter coming
Well, holy cow! This is what I was hoping Sigma might say, but I never expected it to happen. Sigma has just announced that they’re releasing a new full frame Foveon sensor camera in 2019 that uses the Leica L mount. And it’s not just a current Foveon scaled up to full frame, either. It’s an entirely new generation of Foveon sensor. Well, we did know they were working on one. Now we know what it was for!
They’ve also announced Sigma SA, Sigma EF (which includes Canon’s, too), Leica M and Leica PL mount to L mount adapters. This means that right off the bat, the new Panasonic, Sigma and Leica L mount cameras will have access to a huge amount of existing lenses.
Leica catches up with the rest of the world – adds smartphone control
Quite a lot of news is coming from Leica ahead of Photokina 2018. Other than revealing a new medium format camera and collaboration with Panasonic and Sigma, Leica has finally decided to launch Fotos: an app that lets you control your camera with your smartphone.

Leica press release leaks early – confirms collaboration with Panasonic and Sigma
The complete Leica press release confirming the “strategic cooperation” between Leica, Panasonic and Sigma has leaked ahead of today’s official announcement. The (Google translated) press release (original in German here) doesn’t say what cameras or lenses might be announced, just that the three companies are working together to release full frame & APS-C cameras and lenses using the Leica L mount.
A quote from Sigma CEO, Kazuto Yamaki, does confirm, though, that Sigma is planning to release cameras based on the Leica L mount and not just lenses. So we may yet see that full frame Foveon.
