Spinn CW.01 camera wrap 2023 edition comes in a new XL size

The Spinn CW.01 isn’t an entirely new product. It was first launched on Kickstarter last year with all of the backers having had their items shipped out last October. But Spinn is back with a new 2023 version of the CW.01 (buy here). It comes in more optimised sizes, a much larger XL version, and a new colour that doesn’t show up dust nearly as easily as the original black.

What is it? Well, it’s a self-adhesive protective wrap for your camera gear. Wraps to help protect your camera gear in transit aren’t new, but most of them use velcro attachments or a bendable metal inner frame that limits what you can wrap. The Spinn CW.01, on the other hand, features a unique hook & loop system that means it sticks to itself to hold your gear safely and securely.

What is it and why do I need it?

As mentioned, the Spinn CW.01, is a protective wrap for your camera gear. It’s designed to easily wrap around anything you want to protect including cameras, lenses, cameras with lenses attached, flashes, even small tripods, so that when they’re rolling around in your bag, they’re not all banging into each other and reducing any potential impact damage. This means they stay looking new and shiny for longer, minimising the potential for more serious damage.

The new 2023 edition is available in four sizes. Small, Medium, Large and Extra Large, with dimensions of 29x29cm, 39x39cm, 49x49cm and 74x74cm, respectively. These allow you to wrap up a large range of gear, from small lenses up to laptops, LED panels and larger travel tripods.

Many purpose-designed camera bags and backpacks have built-in dividers to protect your gear. Regular bags and backpacks don’t. So, if you want to throw your camera in a regular backpack or messenger bag to do a little street photography while you’re out and about, it has little to no protection. How many of us have resorted to wrapping a camera in a t-shirt in our bags to protect it on our travels? I know I sure have.

Spinn CW.01 essentially allows you to do the same thing. Wrap it up to keep it safe. Unlike a t-shirt, though, Spinn CW.01 is self-adhesive. This ensures that it won’t work lose and leave your camera rolling around the bag when you least expect it.

So what’s new in 2023?

The Spin CW.01 was initially launched in June 2022 via Kickstarter. It saw support from over 3,000 backers, with all units being shipped out by October 2022. The new version is an iteration with modifications based on feedback they’ve received from customers of the original batch. According to the company:

What is new with the 2023 version?

The SPINN CW.01 is a tried and tested product and thousands of customers have been enjoying the benefits of the CW.01 since our first release. We have used the last year to gather a lot of feedback and have implemented the following changes: We have increased the dimensions of the existing sizes S, M & L and added a new size (XL). We have also chosen a colour for the new edition that makes dust and lint almost invisible.

So the product hasn’t changed massively, and keeping the same name will likely confuse some customers, but it shows that the company has been listening to feedback. While I don’t think there’s anything to immediately make existing Spinn CW.01 owners rush out to replace the wraps they already have, the changes will benefit new customers going forward.

Price and Availability

As with the previous Spinn CW.01, the new 2023 edition is available to back on Kickstarter in four sizes. Small, medium, large and extra large Spinn CW.01 are available with dimensions of 29x29cm, 39x39cm, 49x49cm and 74x74cm, respectively. Pledges start at €16 for early birds on the smallest size up to €99 for early birds who want one of each of the four sizes.
