A month after releasing the α68 in Europe, Sony has announced that it is bringing its latest entry-level camera to the US and Canada, contradicting previous rumors that Sony was killing off its A-mount lineup.

As a refresher, the α68 uses Sony’s new 24 megapixel CMOS sensor with Translucent Mirror Technology, which allows users to capture up to 8fps with full autofocus without the need for the EVF to refresh after every shot—a downfall of many mirrorless cameras. Also included is Sony’s SteadyShot image stabilization and 4D autofocus system.

One thing worth pointing out is the lack of a metal lens mount on the α68. Instead, Sony opted for a plastic mounting ring, which sometimes leads to loose lenses down the road. To fix this, you can purchase Fotodiox’s TOUGH E-Mount, which replaces the plastic mount with only a few screws.

As exciting as this news might be for you A-mount users, don’t think you’ll be getting your hands on an α68 during the holiday season. Pre-orders aren’t set to begin until April 2016, with shipment set for April 2016.

The body only will cost $599 (800 CAD), while a kit version including the Sony 18–55mm f/3.5–5.6 will set you back $699 (950 CAD).
