Only a week after announcing the 24mm f/2.8 AF lens for Sony EF, Samyang is adding another compact and lightweight AF lens to their arsenal. The company has announced an AF 85mm f/1.4 lens for Canon EF mount, half the price of the Canon 85mm f/1.4.

Samyang AF 85mm f/1.4 EF is a fast lens made of 9 elements in 7 groups, with 1 Hybrid aspherical lens. It has a coating that promises reduced lens flare and ghosting. The lens weighs 485g without lens caps and hood, and here’s the size comparison with “standard” 85mm lenses:

To compare, Canon EF 85mm f/1.4L IS USM weighs 950g, and Sigma 85mm f/1.4 DG HSM Art weighs 1.13 kg.

Samyang promises “fast, accurate and quiet auto focus performance” of the new AF 85mm f/1.4 EF. In addition, the lens is also weather-sealed and dust-proof, so you can use it in various conditions.

Here are the full specs and more photos:

Model name AF 85mm F1.4 EF
Aperture range F1.4 ~ 16
Lens optical Construction 9 ELEMENTS IN 7 GROUPS
Special lens Hybrid ASP 1

Minium focusing distance 0.90m (2.95ft)

ASP-C 19.0˚
Maximum diameter Φ88.0mm

Samyang AF 85mm f/1.4 EF will be available in July 2018. There are still no B&H and Amazon links, but Photo Rumors suggests that the US price will be $749. To compare, Canon EF 85mm f/1.4L IS USM costs $1,599 and Sigma 85mm f/1.4 DG HSM Art would set you back $1,099. So, Samyang’s 85mm f/1.4 AF lens is definitely cheaper and more compact, and we still have to see how the image quality stacks up against Canon and Sigma.

This is good news based on Samyang’s reputation as a lens builder lately. They’ve come out with several lenses that have been well received and highly regarded, specially in the “bang for your buck” category. Although mostly known for their manual focus lenses, it’s good to see them dabbling in the AF lens market as well. I hope this lens sells well and encourages them to come out with more AF offerings.
