Sotheby’s New York will soon offer a truly remarkable collection of photos up for auction. Among the sold works, you’ll be able to bid for the images by Richard Avedon, Dorothea Lange, Lee Friedlander, Robert Adams, Garry Winogrand, and other famous photographers.
While not all photographers are from the States, this body of work tells the story of American history. It contains some iconic photos such as Dorothea Lange’s Migrant Mother, and photos of celebrities like Andy Warhol or Marylin Monroe.
The collection comes from Pier 24 Photography of the Pilara Family Foundation. It contains 56 items, some being single photos and some collections. An image by Hiroshi Sugimoto, The Music Lesson is estimated to reach up to $500,000, which makes it the most highly-valued in the collection. Richard Avedon’s portrait of coal miners is estimated to reach up to $350,000, and Dorothea Lange’s Migrant Mother follows with an estimate of up to $300,000. Lee Friedlander’s collection of 52 gelatin silver prints is estimated to reach up to $700,000, which makes it the highest-valued item of the collection.
The auction starts on May 1, 2023, at 6:00 PM EDT, and you can see all of the items on Sotheby’s website. According to the auction house, all proceeds from the auctions will be directed to charitable initiatives in healthcare research, education, and the arts.
