Moose Calf Touches His Nose to the Mouth of his Mother Cow

A seasoned Alaskan photographer tragically lost his life after encountering a charging moose while on an outing. Dale Chorman, 70, was reportedly with a friend who escaped unharmed when the attack occurred.

According to Alaska’s News Source, Chorman photographed a mother moose giving birth to her young. “The day was so special that after shooting a few shots of the marvel occurrence, 70-year-old Dale Chorman brought a friend along to find the cow for more pictures,” this source states.

“As they were approaching the area suddenly the moose came crashing out from wherever it was — they hadn’t seen it — on the attack,” Said Chorman’s friend Tim Kizzia. “And they turned to run and his friend looked back and saw that Dale was already on the ground and the moose was standing over Dale.”

“She was just protecting her offspring,” said Chorman’s son Nathan. “Dale had remarked the previous day that the brush was particularly thick this year — thick enough to get closer than intended, and surprise a wild animal by accident.”

Staying safe around moose: a crucial reminder

The incident highlights the inherent dangers of venturing into wild animal habitats. Moose, particularly mothers protecting their young, can be aggressive. Therefore, here are some crucial tips to remember:

  • Maintain distance: always give moose ample space. Never approach them, and be prepared to give them the right of way on trails.
  • Be alert: stay aware of your surroundings and avoid startling a moose by making loud noises or approaching them unexpectedly.
  • Moose with calves: be especially cautious around females with calves. These mothers are fiercely protective and will see you as a threat.
  • Know when to retreat: if a moose displays warning signs like flattened ears or raised hackles, back away slowly and calmly. Do not run unless absolutely necessary, as this can trigger a chase.
  • If charged: if a moose charges, try to find cover behind a large object like a tree or rock. As a last resort, curl up into a ball and protect your head with your hands if the moose makes contact.

We have a great example here of how to behave when a moose approaches. Please stay safe out there, and be aware of the surroundings and the animals around you. Respect their space in order to protect yourself and them equally.
