Irix teases new “Dragonfly” lens to be announced at Photokina

It’s been a while since we’ve seen a new lens from Swiss lens company, Irix. In fact, while they’ve been adding a lot to their Edge filter system, we haven’t seen a new lens since Photokina 2016 when they showed off the 45mm f/1.4 – a lens that still doesn’t exist.

But it looks like they’re teasing a new one for an announcement at Photokina 2018, though. At least, that’s what these three short videos suggest. All we really know is that it’s called “Dragonfly”, but it might be a 150mm macro lens.

PhotoRumors thinks that this might be a 150mm macro lens. How they’ve come up with that specific focal length, I don’t know, but it would certainly fit Irix’s description of “entering new territory”. And Irix does tell us to “be ready for something unexpected” at Photokina.

Given the previous 11mm f/4 and 15mm f/2.4 lenses, a 150 macro sure would be unexpected. But then, as I mentioned, the 45mm f/1.4 still hasn’t actually been released yet. Irix has told us that the 45mm lens has been through pretty much a complete redesign since the initial mockup was shown at Photokina 2016. So, it’s entirely possible (although perhaps unlikely) that the 45mm lens is now coming to fruition.

I guess we’ll just have to wait and see.
