If you ever visit the Explore feed on Instagram, you probably run into more or less stuff that you absolutely hate. Well, Instagram now lets you control it – at least up to a point. The app now has Sensitive Content Control, a brand new feature that lets you choose how much sensitive content you will see in your Explore if any.
“We believe people should be able to shape Instagram into the experience that they want,” Instagram’s parent company Facebook writes in a post. So, the latest feature lets you shape your Explore feed so that it doesn’t show you the content that might disturb you.
From now on, if you want to hide or reduce the sensitive content that appears in your Explore, now you can. Go to your profile and tap on the three lines in the upper right corner. Go to Settings > Account > Sensitive content control. From here, you have three options: to allow everything, to limit sensitive content, or to limit it even more and see fewer posts that could be upsetting or offensive.
“We don’t allow hate speech, bullying, or other content that might present a risk of harm to people.” Facebook writes “We also have rules about what kind of content we show you in places like Explore; we call these our Recommendation Guidelines.” In these Guidelines, Facebook writes which categories of posts are not eligible for Explore. There are quite a lot of these, but you may still see some stuff you’ll find disturbing.
“You can think of sensitive content as posts that don’t necessarily break our rules, but could potentially be upsetting to some people — such as posts that may be sexually suggestive or violent,” Facebook explains. I’m a little confused since I was convinced that Instagram bans all sex and violence from the platform. But apparently, as long as it’s only “suggestive,” it’s cool. And as long as we don’t see nipples (only female ones), everything is fine. Anyhow, limiting some sensitive content is the default, and I changed my settings to allow everything. I’m curious what I’ll see now, but I hope it will at least be something more fun than the crap Instagram keeps offering me in Explore.
