Instagram Live now lets you host fundraisers

Most of us have been stuck at home for weeks and most of our lives have moved online. And as expected, I’ve never seen as many live streams on Instagram as I have over the past two months. But you can now do more with your live stream – Instagram now lets you host a fundraiser and directly donate to a cause you care about.

“Many people are facing challenges at this time,” Instagram writes, “and we want to do our part to support nonprofits and communities who need it the most.” As of yesterday, the platform started unrolling the feature that lets everyone create a fundraiser on Live, with 100% of the money raised going directly to the nonprofit of their choice.

Creating a Live fundraiser is fairly easy. Tap the camera in the top left, or swipe right in your Feed. Tap Live at the bottom of the screen and select Fundraiser. You’ll see a list of nonprofits, and you can choose the one you wish to support. This will start your Live broadcast and you’ll be able to see how many people are supporting your fundraiser, as well as the amount of money raised in real time. You can tap View to see a breakdown of your donors and individual contributions, and you can even thank them in real time by tapping Wave.

I tried to test the feature to let you know how it works, but I still don’t see it on my profile. It’s been rolled out, so I believe it will become available to everyone over the course of a few days. Personally, I think it’s a good idea and a good way to use Instagram Live for something truly useful.
