Insta360 has released a teaser website and video for an upcoming camera to be announced on October 28th. While the company has not yet said anything else about the new camera, there are some things about it that we might be able to glean from the teaser.
There are five clips shown in the video. The first clip shows that the camera can be used underwater. This is pretty common for Insta360 cameras, but up until the Insta360 ONE R, they required an external housing. Whether or not the upcoming camera will be natively waterproof like the Insta360 ONE R or requires an external housing is unclear from the video, but I would hope for the former, given the way small camera trends have been going the last couple of years.
The second clip shows that it supports that instantly recognisable Insta360 shot which is that bullet time spin around a subject. This means it’s almost certain to be a 360° camera and not just a regular single lens, like the 1″ Leica and 4K mods for the Insta360 ONE R or the Insta360 GO.
The third… I’ve no idea. But it looks cool as hell!
The fourth shot shows some pretty impressive tracking. The kind of tracking we’ve seen for regular flat footage in apps like DaVinci Resolve and Adobe After Effects for a while. Insta360 has recently added some new AI tracking features to Insta360 Studio for the desktop that allows you to do similar with your 360° footage, but this looks much steadier than I’ve experienced so far. So, maybe this is something new within the Insta360 smartphone app or suggests that there’s another Insta360 Studio update on the way with improvements to the AI tracking?
The fifth and final shot just shows that it slips into your pocket, really. But most of Insta360’s consumer cameras will fit into your pocket, so that’s not much of a surprise. It probably means that it’s not another Titan, though.
I guess we’ll have to wait until October 28th to find out exactly what it is. What do you think it is?
