It’s not every day that you come across a photographer that quite literally, steals your breath with his images. But that’s exactly what award-winning underwater photographer Benjamín Yávar does, because he’s not just any old underwater photographer, Ben is a freediving underwater photographer.

If that sounds unusual, then it is. Ben’s spectacular images are taken with a single breath, taken several metres under the water’s surface, which makes them even more remarkable. DIYP caught up with Ben shortly after he was awarded first place at the 2024 ColorPro Awards.

DIYP: Can you tell us about your background in freediving and photography and how you got started?

Ben: I started freediving as a personal challenge, but it quickly became a passion. The ocean drew me in, and freediving opened a new world of tranquility and connection with nature. Photography came naturally as I wanted to capture the incredible moments I experienced underwater. My journey has evolved into blending both, allowing me to share these moments with others.

DIYP: Are there any specific advantages or challenges to underwater photography with freediving as opposed to using scuba gear?

Ben: Freediving offers a unique silence and freedom of movement, which makes it easier to approach marine life without disturbance. However, it’s physically demanding. Holding your breath while adjusting settings and composing shots within a limited time frame adds complexity. Lighting is another challenge as depth reduces available light, but the lack of bubbles creates clearer shots.

DIYP: Can you tell us about the camera gear you typically use?

Ben: I use a Sony a7IV with a 12-24mm f4 lens, enclosed in a Seafrogs underwater housing. I recently upgraded to a glass dome port, which significantly improved image sharpness, especially for backlit and split shots. My setup is lightweight, ideal for travel, and performs well for the depths I work in.

DIYP: How do you plan and execute an underwater shoot? Is it more about spontaneous discovery or meticulous preparation?

Ben: It’s a balance of both. I plan around specific weather conditions, tides, and marine activity, but underwater shoots often require adaptability. Marine life is unpredictable, so spontaneity is essential. I also work closely with freedivers or subjects to ensure safety and coordination during the shoot.

DIYP: Can you tell us about the most challenging or memorable photo you’ve taken underwater?

Ben: One memorable shot was capturing sardines with a freediver, Jay,  (like the ones in my Instagram posts). Sardines move as one living organism, creating dynamic, unpredictable patterns. Timing, positioning, and breath-hold endurance made it a challenge, but the reward of seeing that interplay of light, movement, and human presence was unforgettable.

DIYP: Your work highlights the beauty of marine life and the ocean’s landscapes. How do you hope your photography impacts viewers’ perceptions of the underwater world?

Ben: I hope to inspire awe and a deeper appreciation for our oceans. By showcasing marine beauty, I want to evoke curiosity and empathy, encouraging viewers to respect and protect these fragile ecosystems. Every image I capture is a story of harmony between humans and the sea.

DIYP: You’ve won or been a finalist in some major photography awards recently. How do you feel about achieving that recognition? What advice do you have for photographers wanting to enter competitions?

Ben: Winning first place at the ColorPro Awards has been an incredible honor. These achievements validate the hard work and passion I pour into my craft. It’s also a reminder of the power of storytelling through visuals. For aspiring photographers, my advice is to stay true to your vision, be consistent, and embrace feedback. Enter competitions not just for recognition, but for the opportunity to grow, learn, and connect with a broader community of creatives.

DIYP: What projects are you currently working on, and what can we look forward to from you in the future?

Ben: I’m particularly interested in using my photography to highlight environmental issues, creating a visual protest that raises awareness about the need to protect our oceans and marine life.

Looking ahead, I’m also eager to develop my skills in filmmaking. I want to expand beyond photography to create dynamic, immersive films that tell deeper stories about the underwater world, marine conservation, and the human connection to nature. You can expect a blend of powerful imagery, travel, and conservation narratives in both still and moving formats in my upcoming projects.
