Europeans Henri Cartier-Bresson reissue 2025

For the first time in 70 years, the Fondation Henri Cartier-Bresson is reissuing the book The Europeans by the famous photographer. Originally published by Verve in 1955, this book brings together 114 photos Cartier-Bresson took between 1950 and 1955 across ten European countries.

The Europeans was originally published three years after another classic – The Decisive Moment –  and its resounding success. Henri Cartier-Bresson took the photos you’ll find in The Europeans during assignments for Harper’s Bazaar, Life, Holiday, and Paris Match. As the publisher notes, “these images form a unique visual testimony of post-war Europe in the midst of reconstruction.”

“With The Europeans, Henri Cartier-Bresson does not aim to provide an exhaustive inventory, but rather composes a vibrant portrait of the inhabitants of a continent undergoing profound change.”

The reissue is available in a “smaller, more manageable and accessible format,” as the Foundation writes, “while remaining faithful to the spirit of the original edition.” The book contains 156 pages, it’s a hardcover, and costs 42 euros, which I personally find pretty affordable for a set of iconic works like this. But maybe I’m just biased, as I’m a huge fan. :)

Either way, you can order the book on the Henri Cartier-Bresson Foundation’s website. If you have a Henri Cartier-Bresson fan in your life (or you are one), this could be a great gift for this holiday season. Yes, you can gift it to yourself, too.
