Heartbreaking war photo wins 2024 Siena Creative Photo Awards

Siena International Photo Awards (SIPA) has announced the 2024 winners of its annual photo contest. The images in this contest are striking every year, and 2024 is no exception. The overall winner, titled Irreplaceable, is a deeply moving image by Palestinian photographer Ali Jadallah. Taken in Gaza, the image captures the profound human toll of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

The overall winner was revealed at the opening ceremony of the Siena Awards exhibitions on September 28, 2024, along with the Drone Photo Awards and Creative Photo Awards. It portrays the unbearable grief of a woman wounded in an Israeli airstrike in the Ridwan neighborhood of Gaza City as she mourns beside the body of a loved one.

According to the judges, it was the photo’s “raw emotion and evocative narrative” that earned it the highest honor at this year’s competition. In my opinion, it shows the meaninglessness and pain of every war, not just the raging Israeli-Palestinian conflict. In every war, the true victims behind endless political games are regular people like you, me, and the woman in the photo.

Like every year, the SIPA contest awards category winners, which are as stunning as ever. Alongside the overall winner, they will be on display in Siena and its surroundings until November 24. The festival will showcase the winning images from all three competitions, as well as several solo shows tied to cultural and social projects.
