Israeli photographer Gilad Topaz has been named the Grand Prize winner of the 2024 Drone Photo Awards for his mesmerizing aerial shot, “Drifting in Space.” The image was captured during an icebreaker expedition on the Baltic Sea, and presents an ethereal scene where Topaz and his companions, clad in special suits, float in a temporary “pool” carved into the frozen landscape—evoking a sense of astronauts adrift in space.
‘Drifting in Space’ was selected from a competitive pool of 4,000 entries submitted by over 2,000 photographers from 113 countries. The other winning images from other categories include an unusual view of Europe’s tallest skyscraper, landscapes of Utah and Iceland, and a poignant image of the ongoing toll of war. “1 Million Bombs Before”
I love Ukraine. For me, this is not an empty patriotic slogan. It is a deep sentiment that resonates within me and is integral to my identity. I have always dreamt of showcasing the pristine beauty, the natural majesty, and the incredible colors of my homeland. I witnessed and captured these moments alone, armed only with a camera. I photographed well-known locations and documented unfamiliar corners of Ukraine long before the start of the full-scale war. Having traveled more than seventy thousand kilometers across the country in four years, I preserved thousands of scenes, landscapes, views, and spaces in digital formats. Then the idea was conceived to curate the finest among this collection and compile them in a book.
