Falcam to release MagLink – A magnetic camera strap

Falcam, a sub-brand of camera accessory manufacturer Ulanzi, is preparing to announce a new camera strap. Called the MagLink, it’s unlike most camera straps out there, as this one attaches via magnets, not clips or small strap attachments. Beyond the fact that it’s a regular shoulder camera strap and attaches with magnets, no real information has been released about it other than the announcement date.

As a brand, Falcam focuses on quick-release hardware for camera rigs, including tripod and gimbal plates, camera cages and other devices that let you quickly switch your setup. A strap is new to the range, though. It’s expected to come on April 14th, just as NAB 2023 opens up in Las Vegas. DIYP will be attending the show, so we’ll be sure to head to the Ulanzi stand and find out more about it.

Magnets have started popping up into more and more photo and video devices over the last few years. Typically, it’s with lighting. Either to attach modifiers or to attach the light itself to a metal surface. We’ve also seen it popping up in countless filter systems. They’re not usually the first thing you think about when it comes to camera straps, though. Sticking a small set of barn doors or a gel to the front of a light isn’t exactly a heavy load.

A DSLR or mirrorless camera with a large, heavy lens on it, however… That’s another matter entirely. I’m curious to see how the attachment mechanism works, how the magnets benefit it and how quickly and easily it can actually be detached from the camera.

I’ve been a huge fan of Peak Design’s anchor system over the last few years. It allows me to use a single strap with any of the cameras in my gear collection and lets me quickly take them off when I want to put the camera on a tripod, slider or gimbal. If the MagLink can offer an even easier and smoother strap-swapping workflow, Peak Design’s anchors might finally have some competition!
