The Budapest International Foto Awards (BIFA) has announced its 2024 winners, spotlighting the incredible diversity and power of visual storytelling. Louis-Philippe Provost was named Photographer of the Year in the Professional division for his stunning image Spiral At The Museum. But other than the overall winner, we also have category winners among professionals and amateurs, ranging from natural disasters and war to fine art photography.
Capturing the iconic staircase at the Art Gallery of Ontario, designed by Frank Gehry, Louis-Philippe Provost’s winning image mesmerized the judges. Its delicate interplay of light, structure, and elegance won the jury’s vote, earning Provost the top spot in the contest.
Provost shared his thoughts on the winning image:
“Capturing Spiral At The Museum was a journey of finding the right moment where light, perspective, and form aligned perfectly. It’s an honor to have my work celebrated among such talented photographers.”

The Discovery of the Year title in the Student/Amateur division went to João Coelho for Taming Giants. His evocative series offers a raw glimpse into the grueling labor of young workers dismantling ships in an Angolan graveyard. The photos portray resilience amidst harsh conditions, telling a profound story of human strength and endurance.
Coelho expressed gratitude for the recognition of his image:
“This series is deeply personal to me. It shines a light on the resilience and strength of people who work tirelessly in incredibly harsh conditions. To have it resonate with the judges is profoundly humbling.”

Hannah Lillethun, Program Director of BIFA, emphasized the high caliber of this year’s entries. “The quality and artistry of all the submissions were truly remarkable,” she said. “Each photograph displayed a deep sense of creativity and craftsmanship, standing as a testament to the power of visual storytelling.”
Provost and Coelho received cash prizes of $3,000 and $2,000 respectively, along with the prestigious BIFA trophy. Main category winners were also honored with cash awards and will have the opportunity to showcase their work in exhibitions worldwide throughout the year, securing global recognition for their outstanding contributions to photography.
