Couple asked photographer for a refund if they ever get divorced

Professional photographers get all kinds of weird requests during their career. And just when you think you’ve heard everything, someone asks for a refund in case they get divorced.
Yup, you read it right. A couple asked a photographer if he could add a clause that guarantees a refund in case they get divorced. A Reddit user justinwheelon shared a screenshot of this message online, and it caused plenty of reactions within the community.
Now, this is so ridiculous that I’m sure someone is trolling. On the other hand, people can get highly creative when they need a reason to have the photographers work at a lower rate or for free. One of the things I personally find the most annoying is when people don’t appreciate someone’s work. This is one of the reasons I choose photography to remain just a hobby, but it still annoys me when I see how clients treat the photographers. I mean, what it would be like if we all behaved like this with other professions?
With all this in mind, I wouldn’t be surprised if someone actually asks for a refund in case they get a divorce. Even if this particular person is just a troll, who knows, he may give an idea to someone. I’m sure there’ll be plenty of witty new ways for people to undermine the photographers’ work. And this one is certainly one of the most creative I’ve seen so far.
What’s the weirdest request you received when someone tried to convince you to work for free or grant a refund? Share your stories in the comments below.

Wise words spoken.
I’d be willing to give them 25% off the next wedding since they’re repeat customers.
This is brilliant! :)
Best reply you could give hahaha
This is smart. Love the way your brain works <3
Hello, my fiance and I are looking for a car but are having some issues with the contracts we are coming across. We are wanting a clause that guarantees us a refund should we ever wreck the car, since we would not need the car in that situation. Please let me know if this is something you have in your contract or would be willing to add. Thank you!
I do a lot of newborn photography. I had one mom who contacted me who felt she should get a steep discount on her newborn pictures because her “baby was ugly and did not look like a little girl” so she “would not be able to show off her baby on social media like other moms.”
For the record there was nothing wrong with her baby. I feel bad for that child. She is never going to be pretty enough for her mom.
That is quite sad indeed :(
“Sorry lady, but that baby was so ugly I needed therapy for PTSD after that photoshoot, which I should bill you extra for, but I’m gonna let it slide if you F the F off right F’ing NOW!”
A face only a mother could love.
That’s so sad, embrace your child every one is beautiful and special.
I had another person conact a studio I use to work at who offered us a whopping $20 to send a photographer to her children’s first communion. She only wanted one picture of her children so she felt $20 was a fair price, but she would be ok if we took a few more pictures for free for her.
She was absolutely flabbergasted when we turned her down.
I wonder if they’ll return all their wedding presents if they get divorced.
I would be happy to give them a full refund, minus all my actual costs and charges related to time spent at the event and during the selection/editing process, on the condition that they returned 100% of the delivered images. They wouldn’t end up getting anything.
Their employer should ask for refund of their salary if they ever quit their job :/
Edit in a new bride or groom? When Adobe demonstrated content aware editing way back this was my first thought: “digital divorce”. It would be trickier with brides and the elaborate dresses. Grooms? A tux is a tux.
Question asked of waiter at restaurant: “Will you refund my meal after I have pooped it out? We obviously won’t need it at that stage…”
Had a lady tell me one time that I shouldn’t offer my services to charities unless I specifically stated that I did not give the CD of images with the package. C’mon Man!!!
I had a father of the bride contact me about ten days after the wedding requesting a refund because his daughter had just left her new husband. It had been a big wedding (church, country club reception, Hawaii honeymoon) but the bride didn’t want to cancel beforehand because of all the expense that had been committed. He felt that, since the photos were no longer needed, I should grant him a full refund. Naturally, I politely told him that I was disinclined to acquiesce to his request… The photos were but a small part of what my fee included and if he were to review the contract, it lists time, material, and expertise as among the services rendered. All of which had been expended.
He was very upset and started threatening a lawsuit, which I agreed was certainly his right, but since I had delivered everything agreed to up to that point, it would be merit-less. I understood he was very upset and I tried to be sympathetic, but he continued to attempt to threaten, negotiate, then bargain for the next month, all to no avail.
Very important lesson for new wedding photographers:
~ Always insist on full payment before the wedding day. No exceptions. ~
If they are already thinking about what to do in case they divorce, then they clearly should not be getting married in the first place.
Plenty of couples live together happily for years without marrying, yet many couples marry and divorce like it’s a fashion accessory.
