While in Bermuda with a group of photographers recently, photographer Peter Hurley managed to land himself a tour of the Oracle Team USA compound while the team is over there training and preparing to defend their America’s Cup title.
The tour, arranged through friend and Oracle Team USA tactician, Andrew Campbell, turned into a surprise portrait shoot when it was brought up in conversation that they needed photos of the team. What else was Peter to do?
It’s strange seeing Peter outside of the studio, but you can see he’s just as comfortable shooting out on location, even at very short notice.
Most of the portraits are of the sort of variety we’d expect in a sports team headshot.
Never one to be satisfied by ordinary, Peter told his assistants to start throwing buckets of water at them, specifically, two time America’s Cup winner Jimmy Spithill.
If nothing else, it’s a pretty unique portrait, and the water offers a theme that very much fits the subject.
It’s things like this that fit in line with the Benjamin Von Wong video we shared yesterday about pushing yourself and your work. Strive to do something different, and don’t just don’t stick with the “safe shots”.
I mean, what’s the worst that could happen? Your subject gets a bit wet? Sure, or it could result in something pretty awesome.
