Nikon’s New Z6 III Has No Wi-Fi or Bluetooth and Costs $400 More. Here’s Why

Nikon has announced a new and downgraded version of the Z6 III. Sure, it may lack Wi-Fi of Bluetooth connectivity, but at least it costs nearly $400 more than the Nikon Z6 III version that does have them.

Wait, what?!

Yup, the new Nikon Z 6III comes without Wi-Fi or Bluetooth connectivity. But when it comes to other specs, they’re identical to the version that was announced two years ago. The 24.5MP CMOS sensor, 6K 60p N-RAW recording, Full HD 240p slow motion video, 60 fps JPEG shooting, and other notable features. You also have ports for physical, wired connections for data transfer and power supply.

The only two differences are the connectivity options (or lack thereof) and the price. For comparison, the standard Nikon Z6 III costs $1,996.95 (it’s on a $700 discount now), and the Wi-Fi-free version, with an equal discount, is $2,379.95.

But… Why?

I assumed there had to be a reason for this, so I explored and learned something new today. As Nikon Rumors writes, there are several key reasons why Nikon would sell a camera without Wi-Fi or Bluetooth. First, there’s SCIF and secure facility compliance, as many government and intelligence facilities (Sensitive Compartmented Information Facilities) “prohibit any device that can transmit wirelessly to prevent data leaks or remote access risks,” as this source notes.

Then, we have government contracts, the “documented bulk purchases where agencies specifically require ‘no wireless connectivity’ cameras that meet their security standards.” Another new thing I learned is that Nikon is often the only choice because they can deliver camera bodies that are properly modified. There could also be other institutional or professional uses, including “law enforcement, corporate security teams, forensic work, or any environment with strict RF (radio frequency) policies.”

My guess was also that perhaps some countries restrict cameras with wireless transmitters, but that’s just a guess. Either way, this Z 6III is for specific uses and situations, and if you’re looking into buying one… Perhaps stick with the standard version.
