Google announced that Nano Banana is coming straight to Google Photos via new AI‑powered templates and editing features. In a blog post published by the tech giant, the company described how users will get smarter assistance when editing or organizing their images.

Ask Google Photos

According to the Google blog, the update will let you “ask Photos” to perform tasks like selecting the best shots, applying themed edits, or generating creative layouts automatically. You can also edit those little overlooked details quickly – remove someone’s sunglasses, open their eyes, add smiles, etc. The company adds that you’ll see suggestions customized for your photo library. This should give you the feeling that Google is adapting to how you use your photos.

One standout feature is the new Template mode. Google explains that after scanning a set of images, Photos will propose a template that aligns with what you are trying to do. For example, a collage of holiday snaps or a stylized look for your recent pet photos. The idea is to reduce the manual work and let the algorithm handle the layout and aesthetic. This feature rolls out for Android in the U.S. and India starting this week. These new templates will “help you create images instantly based on popular edits,” Google writes. These can include prompts like “‘put me in a high fashion photoshoot,’ ‘create a professional headshot’ or ‘put me in a winter holiday card’”, the company further notes.

In addition, Google emphasizes accessibility. The blog reads Nano Banana’s capabilities are built into the existing Photos app, so you won’t need to install separate tools.  “Starting this week, Ask Photos will be rolling out to more than 100 new countries and regions” Google notes, “and 17 new languages.”

Is This Bananas?

The arrival of Nano Banana in Google Photos comes amid broader AI‑based photography and editing developments. As we reported earlier, Nano Banana is also used in CAIRA, which brings Google’s AI capabilities to mirrorless systems. It expands Nano Banana’s reach beyond Google Photos and image editing into actually capturing images.

In addition, Nano Banana is also now an integrative part of Google Gemini. You can now apply advanced edits using a chatbot, with minimal effort. Together, these developments signal a shift: both taking and editing photos are now tied to AI more and more.

Personally, I find all this a bit too much. Indeed, some AI tools can be beneficial in image editing, such as those integrated into Adobe and Skylum software, for example. And not all of those are useful or helpful (I’m looking at you, Body AI). I wonder how far it will go and when we’ll go back to basics. Because I feel that the question isn’t if we’ll go back, but when.
